Synopsis

NEAR COLLISION ON THE GND AT EWR; NJ.

Narrative

AFTER PUSHING FROM GATE AB AT EWR; PARKED AND WAITING FOR GND TO CLR US OUT TXWY RB; ACFT Y RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI OUT TXWY RB BEFORE US. HE WAS PARKED TO OUR R AND BEGAN HIS TAXI WHICH WOULD TAKE HIM IN FRONT OF US OUT TXWY RB. I WAS ABOUT TO BEGIN A L TURN DOWN OUR RAMP PAST GATE CD TO GIVE HIM ROOM; BUT BEFORE WE COULD MOVE; ACFT Y TAXIED TOWARD US. EVEN AT THIS TIME WE COULD TELL HIS ACFT SPD WAS HIGH AND HE WAS NOT GOING TO STOP AND LET US CLR THE AREA FOR HIM. HIS TAXI LIGHT CLRLY ILLUMINATED US AND BY NOW THE NOSE OF THE DC10 WAS SO CLOSE TO US IT WAS BEYOND BELIEF. WE BOTH UNBUCKLED OUR SEATBELTS IN PREPARATION TO ESCAPE THE IMPENDING COLLISION. THEN ACFT Y TURNED R OUT TXWY RB; THE L SIDE OF THE FUSELAGE FILLING OUR WINDSHIELD. I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW FAST HE WAS GOING OR THAT HIS L WING HAD NOT HIT OUR R WING. JUST WHEN WE WERE ABOUT TO JUMP TO THE COCKPIT FLOOR; HIS L WINGTIP ZOOMED BY OUR WINDSHIELD. IT HAD TO BE TRAVELING 30 KTS AND WE WERE FROZEN WATCHING IT GO BY NOT MORE THAN 5 FT IN FRONT OF OUR NOSE. ACFT Y NEVER SLOWED DOWN; PROMPTLY MADE A WRONG TURN ONTO TXWY B. I AM NOT CERTAIN OF ACFT Y TURNING THE WRONG WAY. WE WERE SO RATTLED BY THE INCIDENT AT THIS POINT I CANNOT BE CERTAIN EXCEPT BY HIS XMISSIONS TO GND AFTER HIS TURN ONTO TXWY B. WE HAD A CHANCE TO WATCH ACFT Y TAXI AS WE RECEIVED OUR TAXI CLRNCS AND HIS TECHNIQUE WAS ALWAYS THE SAME. VERY FAST. USUALLY A DC10-30 LOOKS LIKE IT IS MOVING SLOW BECAUSE IT IS SO BIG; BUT NOT THIS ONE. IT MOVED FAST. WE DEPARTED BEFORE HE DID.
