SOLO STUDENT PLT USED THE ACTIVE RWY FOR TAXIING BACK TO THE FBO AFTER HE BELIEVED THAT HIS TURN COORDINATOR WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. GND CTLR REQUESTED THAT THE STUDENT EXIT THE RWY.
AT APPROX XA00 LCL TIME ON MAR/SAT/00; MY STUDENT WAS IN THE RUN-UP AREA AT RWY 26L AT BRACKETT FIELD. HE WAS PREPARING TO FLY HIS FINAL SOLO XCOUNTRY FLT FROM POC-DAG-PSP-POC. DURING HIS RUN-UP HE FELT THE TURN COORDINATOR WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. HE ASKED GND CTL FOR PERMISSION TO TAXI BACK TO FBO; AN FBO LOCATED ON THE XA SIDE OF BRACKETT FIELD. GND CTL GAVE HIM PERMISSION TO TAXI BACK TO FBO. TAXIED UP TO RWY 26L; CHKED FINAL APCH; AND THEN PROCEEDED TO TAXI VIA RWY 26L TOWARDS FBO. HE WAS TOLD TO EXIT THE RWY AND HE PROMPTLY DID SO. UPON RETURNING TO FBO HE EXPLAINED TO ME WHAT HAD HAPPENED. WE THEN SPENT APPROX 30 MINS DISCUSSING RWY AND TXWY OPS; THE DIFFERENCE BTWN GND CTL AND TWR CTL; AND THE DANGERS INVOLVED IN ENTERING AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT PERMISSION. WE ALSO DISCUSSED THE IMPORTANCE OF REPEATING THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO HIM; AND ASKING FOR MORE CLR INSTRUCTIONS IF HE IS EVER UNSURE OF HIS INSTRUCTIONS. I FEEL FULLY UNDERSTANDS HIS MISTAKE AND HE WILL BE MUCH MORE CAUTIOUS IN THE FUTURE. ALSO; IN THE FUTURE; I WILL ENFORCE TO MY STUDENTS THE DANGERS OF RWY INCURSIONS. I WILL ALSO TRY TO NEVER ASSUME MY STUDENTS KNOW ABOUT SOMETHING. I WILL TRY TO PAY MORE ATTN TO DETAILS WHEN TEACHING MY STUDENTS.
