Synopsis

B727 CREW HAD THE L MAIN GEAR COLLAPSE ON LNDG ROLLOUT.

Narrative

DURING LNDG ROLLOUT ON RWY 7 AT YAP ISLAND; FEDERATED STATE OF MICRONESIA; ONCE AIRSPD DECELERATED BELOW 80 KIAS; WE HEARD A LOUD BANG AND LOUD POP. THE ACFT LISTED TO THE L AND THE ACFT STARTED GOING OFF THE RWY AT THE 1000 FT REMAINING MARKER. ACFT CAME TO REST WITH THE TAIL AND R WING STILL ON RWY. EVAC OF ALL PAX WAS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH THE L1 DOOR; SLIDE WAS DEPLOYED! NO INJURIES! IT APPEARS THAT THE FRONT SUPPORT BAR FOR L GEAR FAILED AND THEN CAUSED L GEAR TO MOVE REARWARD AND UP INTO L WING STRUT AREA. L WING LEDS AND FLAPS TOTALED; AS WELL AS L GEAR AND FAIRINGS. TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE; I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT AN EMER AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE BE ISSUED TO ALL B727 OPERATORS WORLDWIDE TO IMMEDIATELY INSPECT THE FORWARD SUPPORT BAR (BRACE) OF THE L AND R MAIN GEARS; BY REMOVING THE PROTECTIVE SHEET METAL COVER TO INSPECT FOR CRACKS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: ACFT IS BEING REPAIRED SO THAT IT CAN BE FERRIED TO TAIWAN FOR PERTINENT REPAIR. ACFT IS SCHEDULED TO BE RETURNED TO LINE SVC BY THE END OF MAY. THE ACR; FAA; BOEING; AND THE NTSB ARE ALL INVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION. THE FLT RECORDER HAS CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS NO HARD LNDG AND THERE WAS NO SIDELOAD PLACED ON THE GEAR AT TOUCHDOWN. THE CREW WAS NOT FAULTED IN ANY WAY. THE LNDG GEAR HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE ACR MAINT BASE FOR METALLURGICAL ANALYSIS. THIS IS NOT YET COMPLETED. THE PRELIMINARY FINDING IS THAT THE FORWARD TRUNION SUPPORT ARM FRACTURED. ALSO; THE L GEAR HAD BEEN REPLACED WITHIN THE PAST MONTH.
