B757 CREW HAD SPD DEV IN MIA CLASS E.

Narrative

ALL NIGHT FLT LAX-MIA STARTED DSCNT FROM FL350 USING DISTANCE ON FMS. FMS WAS PROGRAMMED DIRECT MIA; BREAK IN RTE; THEN THE APCH FOR RWY 9L. CLRED FOR DSCNT TO 10000 FT THEN 3000 FT. OUT OF 30000 FT REALIZED WE WERE HIGH AND USED SPD BRAKES. OUT OF ABOUT 15000 FT GIVEN VECTORS TO INTERCEPT ILS FINAL. STILL HIGH. FO WAS UNABLE TO PUT INTERCEPT LEG INTO FMS SO I TRIED. STILL HIGH; NOW FAST. STILL COULDN'T PROGRAM FMS CORRECTLY. CAUGHT MYSELF GOING THROUGH 10000 FT AT 300 KTS. LEVELED OFF AT ABOUT 8700 FT THEN SLOWED TO 250 KTS. ALL NIGHTERS; ERRONEOUS FMS DATA; FMS PROBS; AND HIGH; FAST DSCNTS DON'T MIX. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 475552: WE WERE DOING AN APCH INTO MIA. WE BEGAN A LATE DSCNT; SO WE WERE HIGH. BEGAN DSCNT AND THEN GOT PREOCCUPIED WITH PUTTING THE PROPER ILS APCH IN THE FMS. BTWN THE COMBINATION OF STARTING A LATE DSCNT; PROB WITH THE FMS; AND DOING AN ALL NIGHT FLT; WE GOT BEHIND. ALTHOUGH I MADE THE PROPER CALL TO MAKE THE CAPT AWARE WE WERE APCHING 10000 FT; MY PREOCCUPATION WITH THE FMS DISTRACTED ME FROM REALIZING HE FAILED TO SLOW. IMMEDIATELY AT 10000 FT; WE EVENTUALLY MADE THE DISCOVERY AND BEGAN TO SLOW AT APPROX 9500 FT.
