Synopsis

B757 CREW HAD TRACK DEV ON DEP AT SMF.

Narrative

TKOF FROM SACRAMENTO; CA (SMF); FO FLYING THE DUDES 9 DEP. TKOF WAS NORMAL; LNAV AND VNAV SELECTED. UPON CONTACT WITH DEP CTL; TOLD TO TURN TO A 090 DEG HDG RATHER THAN THE 140 DEG HDG AS SPECIFIED IN THE SID. THEN TOLD TO INTERCEPT THE SAC 058 DEG RADIAL OUTBOUND. REPROGRAMMING THE FMS WAS A PROB DUE TO THE UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE UPGRADE ON THIS ACFT. THE PROGRAM DOES NOT HAVE A DIR/INTC PAGE LIKE THE BASIC FMS WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH. THE RESULTING DELAY AND CONFUSION AS TO CLRNC; RESULTED IN THE ACFT TURNING S TO THE LIAMM FIX. SACRAMENTO DEP THEN ASKED 'HOW WE GOT ON OUR HEADING; YOU WERE GIVEN A 090 DEG HDG.' WE IMMEDIATELY TURNED L AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE MISTAKE. NO LOSS OF SEPARATION BTWN TFC WAS NOTED. ADDITIONAL DISTRACTIONS INCLUDED AFTER TKOF CHKLIST COMPLETION; AND TA GIVEN BY SACRAMENTO DEP CTL. OUR TRAINING ON THE NEW FMS CONSISTED OF A 47 PAGE MANUAL WITH NO HANDS ON OR CLASSROOM TRAINING. THIS MANUAL IS VERY DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND WITHOUT PRACTICE AND FURTHER TRAINING. I BELIEVE OUR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE RADAR VECTOR WAS DUE TO LACK OF TRAINING AND UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE NEW FMS SOFTWARE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: CREW WAS FLYING A B767-300ER ACFT. THE UPGRADE TO THE FMS IS BEING RETROFITTED TO ALL THE ACR B767-300 ACFT. ONLY TWO OF THE ACR'S B767 SIMULATORS ARE THE -300. THEY HAVE BEEN RETROFITTED. THE RPTR HAS NEVER BEEN SCHEDULED IN EITHER OF THE -300 SIMULATORS EVEN THOUGH HE HAS BEEN TO TRAINING TWICE NOW. THE DIFFERENCES SECTION RELEASED BY THE ACR IS ALMOST USELESS; AS SOME TYPE OF HANDS ON TRAINING IS REQUIRED FOR FMS OP. THE RPTR HAS ALSO SUBMITTED A COMPANY RPT.
