A CFI AND STUDENT IN AN R22 HELI EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF ACFT CTL WITH THE ACFT SETTLING ON ITS L SIDE DURING A HOVER OP AT LANSING MUNICIPAL; IGQ; IL.

Narrative

I BEGAN THE FLT WITH MY STUDENT AROUND AB40. I WAS IN THE L SEAT AND HER THE R. THE AWOS STATED WIND 020 DEGS AT 11 KTS WHEN WE DEPARTED. WE LEFT THE N RAMP AND TAXIED TO AND CROSSED RWY 9 AT THE NUMBERS. WE PRACTICED HOVERING IN THE FIELD NW OF THE PYRAMID BUILDING. WE THEN DEPARTED FOR R CLOSED TFC FOR PARALLEL RWY 9 AND RETURNED TO THAT AREA. UPON COMING BACK INTO A HOVER; I NOTICED THE WIND HAD SHIFTED MORE TO FAVOR RWY 36. WE HOVERED E TO RWY 36; DEPARTED; AND DID 1 TFC PATTERN WITH R TFC FOR RWY 36. WE CAME TO A HOVER S OF THE PAVED RWYS 9/27 AND AGAIN STARTED TO PRACTICE HOVERING. AT SEVERAL POINTS WHILE PRACTICING; THE ACFT BECAME UNSTABLE; I CORRECTED. WE DID ALL HOVERING FROM A HT BTWN 5-10 FT AGL. THE LAST TIME; WHEN HOVERING; THE ACFT BEGAN TO DRIFT L AND TURN L; WITH A NOSE LOW ALT. I CAME INTO CORRECT AND I RAISED THE COLLECTIVE. THE ACFT CONTINUED TO SETTLE ONTO THE GND AND ROLLED TO ITS L SIDE. I SHUT OFF THE GAS; AS IT WAS LEAKING; TURNED OFF THE KEY; SHUT OFF THE SWITCHES; HELPED HER TO EXIT; AND WALKED BACK. THERE WERE NO INJURIES.
