PLT OF A CESSNA 182 MADE GAR AFTER OBSERVING A CANADAIR CHALLENGER IN POS ON THE OTHER END OF THE RWY AT A NON CTLED ARPT.

Narrative

AS PIC OF ACFT #1; I BEGAN MONITORING CTAF AND ANNOUNCED POS; ALT; AND ARR INTENTIONS (FULL-STOP LNDG) AT 7 NM W OF 4R4. FLT ORIGINATED AT GPT SOME 30 MINS EARLIER. ARPT 4R4 IS UNTOWERED WITH UNICOM TYPICALLY UNMANNED BY SINGLE FBO; AND I RECEIVED NO RWY OR TFC INFO AND HEARD NO OTHER ACFT IN THE VICINITY. I REPEATED THE ANNOUNCEMENT APPROX 2 NM W; LEVEL AT PATTERN ALT AND ADVISED MY INTENTION TO VIEW THE WINDSOCK PRIOR TO RWY SELECTION. I CROSSED THE RWY 1 THRESHOLD; CIRCLED TO THE N; AND; BY REF TO THE WINDSOCK ON THE FIELD; OBSERVED THE WIND TO BE APPROX 3-5 KTS FROM THE NNE; FAVORING RWY 1. I ANNOUNCED MY INTENTION TO ENTER L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 1. I OBSERVED NO TFC IN THE AIR OR ON THE GND; BUT HEARD A XMISSION FROM A CESSNA 152 (ACFT #3) INBOUND FROM THE NW WHO ANNOUNCED HIS INTENTION TO ENTER L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 1. PATTERN ENTRY AND FLT WERE NORMAL. I ANNOUNCED TURNS TO BASE AND FINAL AND HEARD ACFT #3 BEHIND ME ANNOUNCE DOWNWIND. AS I BEGAN MY ROUNDOUT AND FLARE JUST PRIOR TO LNDG; I HEARD A XMISSION FROM THE FOLLOWING ACFT #3 ASKING IF I HAD SEEN THE CHALLENGER JET (ACFT #2) AT THE OPPOSITE END OF RWY 1. AT ABOUT THAT SAME MOMENT; I LOOKED UP THE RWY MYSELF AND SAW A LARGE BIZJET AT THE OPPOSITE (N) END OF RWY 1; POSITIONED ON THE CTRLINE FOR A TKOF ON RWY 19. NOW JUST A FEW FT ABOVE THE RWY; I IMMEDIATELY INITIATED A GAR AND R TURN TO THE E. I ACKNOWLEDGED THE XMISSION FROM THE FOLLOWING ACFT #3; I CLEANED UP THE ACFT; AND CLBED OUT ON AN UPWIND LEG PARALLELING THE RWY. AS I APCHED MID-FIELD; ACFT #2 BEGAN ROLLING AND ANNOUNCED ON CTAF A DEP ON RWY 19. I QUERIED ACFT #2; ASKING IF HE HAD MONITORED THE CTAF. HE ANSWERED THAT HE HAD XMITTED HIS TAXI INTENTIONS AND HAD HEARD NO OTHER TFC. I REPLIED THAT I HAD NOT HEARD THE TAXI XMISSION. THE ACFT #3 PLT VOLUNTEERED THAT HE DID NOT HEAR ACFT #'2 PRIOR XMISSION; EITHER. ACFT #2 DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE EITHER OF THESE XMISSIONS; MADE NO OTHER XMISSION ON FREQ; AND DEPARTED THE PATTERN TO THE S. ACFT #3 ANNOUNCED AND MADE A 360 DEG R TURN TO THE W FROM DOWNWIND LEG TO ALLOW ACFT #2 TO DEPART. I REENTERED THE PATTERN BEHIND ACFT #3 WITH ANNOUNCEMENTS; AND NORMAL LNDGS WERE MADE ON RWY 1 BY ACFT'S #1 AND #3. SUBSEQUENT TO LNDG; THE PLT OF ACFT #3 STATED THAT HE HAD OBSERVED ACFT #2 TAXI TO RWY 19 AS I WAS ON MY BASE LEG. A LINEMAN AT THE FBO STATED THAT TFC HAD BEEN USING RWY 1 'ALL MORNING.' ANOTHER GND WITNESS STATED THAT ACFT #2 HAD LANDED RECENTLY TO 'PICK UP SOME KIDS' AND HAD DEPARTED QUICKLY. IN THE FUTURE; IT WOULD BEHOOVE ME TO PAY CLOSER ATTN TO ACFT MOVEMENTS ON THE GND DURING THE FINAL PHASES OF THE LNDG; IE; BASE AND LONG FINAL; EVEN IF NO RADIO XMISSION INDICATES SUCH A MOVEMENT. THE CONFLICT IS THAT THIS IS TYPICALLY A TIME FOR PAYING CLOSE ATTN TO THE LNDG ACFT CONFIGN AND CTL; AS WELL.
