Synopsis

AN INSTRUCTOR AND HIS STUDENT IN A PA28-161 AT LEESBURG; VA; RPT A CONFLICT WITH ANOTHER ACFT APCHING TO LAND ON THE OPPOSING END OF THE RWY THEY WERE PRACTICING LNDGS.

Narrative

EARLY FLT TO PRACTICE SHORT AND SOFT FIELD OPS. MY STUDENT AND I WERE 1 HR INTO THE FLT WHEN THERE WERE SEVERAL ARRS ON THE LOC RWY 17 APCH WHICH RESULTED IN SOME DEP DELAYS FOR ACFT WAITING ON THE STRAIGHT-IN TFC. ONE CITATION JET RPTED A 6 MI FINAL AND MY STUDENT AND I SUCCESSFULLY EXECUTED A SOFT-FIELD TKOF AND WERE OFF THE RWY AND CLR CAUSING NO PROB TO THE ARRIVING CITATION. 2 LNDGS LATER; WE WERE FACED WITH ANOTHER CITATION WHO RPTED A 4 MI FINAL. I INSTRUCTED MY STUDENT TO EXPEDITE HIS DEP AND PERFORM YET ANOTHER SOFT-FIELD TKOF. THERE WAS SOME DELAY ON MY STUDENT'S PART; AND WE LOST VALUABLE SECONDS. WE ROLLED ONTO THE CTRLINE AND BEGAN THE TKOF; BUT THE CITATION HAD TO EXECUTE A GAR. THE CLOSE CALL WAS COMPLETELY MY FAULT. I MADE A POOR JUDGEMENT CALL AND ENDANGERED BOTH CREWS AND ACFT. THE CREWS WERE FRENCH CANADIAN AND I FELT THAT PERHAPS THEIR UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE APCH CAUSED THEM TO UNDERESTIMATE THEIR DISTANCE OUT. IT WAS I WHO UNDERESTIMATED THE SPD OF THE CITATION AND MADE ONE OF THE POOREST DECISIONS IN MY FLYING CAREER. IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE SKILL OF THE CREW; I FEEL THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT OUTCOME AND FAR MORE TO COME OF IT THAN THIS RPT.
