Synopsis

MD80 CREW HAD 2 TKOF ABORTS DUE TO FLAP-SLAT WARNINGS.

Narrative

ABORTED TKOF. BEFORE WE LEFT I NOTICED SEVERAL WRITE-UPS ON THE SLAT DISAGREEMENT LIGHT FLICKERING ON SELECTION OF LNDG FLAPS. ALL INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL PRIOR TO INITIATION OF OUR TKOF ROLL. AT 50 KTS THE AURAL WARNING SOUNDED 'SLATS' SO I ABORTED THE TKOF. AFTER CLRING THE RWY WE RECYCLED THE FLAPS AND SLATS TO UP THEN 8 DEGS FOR TKOF. ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL. I ATTEMPTED A SECOND TKOF AFTER CHKING THE AURAL WARNING SEVERAL TIMES TO ENSURE THAT THE FLAPS AND SLATS WERE INDEED SET FOR TKOF. AT 110 KTS THE AURAL WARNING SOUNDED AGAIN; THIS TIME ACCOMPANIED BY A FLICKERING SLAT DISAGREEMENT LIGHT. I ABORTED THE TKOF USING MANUAL BRAKES AND SPOILERS SINCE RWY XXR IS A LONG RWY. WE EXITED LAST HIGH SPD AND RETURNED TO THE RAMP. I CALLED FOR THE FIRE TRUCKS TO MONITOR THE MAIN GEAR SINCE THE TEMP WAS APCHING 300 DEGS. OUR GUYS CHOCKED THE WHEELS AND I RELEASED THE BRAKES TO COOL THE BRAKES. WHEN THE BRAKE TEMPS RETURNED TO NORMAL WE TAXIED TO THE GATE AND LET THE PAX OFF. THE PLANE WAS TAKEN OTS AND THE FLT DEPARTED LATER WITH A DIFFERENT ACFT AND COCKPIT CREW SINCE THE COPLT AND I WERE OUT OF DUTY DAY. IN RETROSPECT; I SHOULD NOT HAVE ATTEMPTED THE SECOND TKOF. IT IS UP TO MAINT TO FIX THEM AND I SHOULD HAVE HANDED IT OVER TO THEM AFTER THE FIRST ABORT I WAS SO SURE THE PROB WAS A GLITCH IN THE INDICATING SYS FOR THE SLAT AURAL WARNING AND THAT IT WAS FIXED AFTER RECYCLING THE FLAPS AND SLATS THAT I GAVE IT A SECOND ATTEMPT. WON'T DO THAT AGAIN.
