Synopsis

B747 SETS UP FOR AN APCH TO THE WRONG RWY AT LOS ANGELES AFTER BEING CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO THE W FROM OVER SANTA MONICA.

Narrative

CLRED VISUAL APCH TO RWY 24R FROM R BASE; REF TFC ON FINAL FOR RWY 24R. DURING TURN; CONFIGURING ACFT AND WATCHING TFC (ANOTHER ACFT WAS ON FINAL FOR S COMPLEX (RWYS 25). WE CONTINUED DOG-LEG TO FINAL AT 4 MI AND AT 1200 FT MSL; TWR SAID 'CONFIRM LNDG RWY 24R.' WE IMMEDIATELY REALIZED WE WERE SETTING UP FOR APCH TO RWY 25R. SIGHTED PROPER RWY; MADE CORRECTION AND LANDED ON RWY 24R WITHOUT INCIDENT. TWR CONFIRMED ON LANDLINE THAT THERE HAD BEEN NO CONFLICT OR DANGER AND NO FURTHER ACTION WOULD BE REQUIRED OR TAKEN. INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED BY PAYING INCREASED ATTN TO LOC AS BACKUP; AND BY MAINTAINING VISUAL CONTACT WITH CLRED RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 483520: DUE TO MORNING SUN; HVY HAZE; FINDING TFC AND CONFIGURING ACFT FOR LNDG; VISUAL ON RWY 24R WAS LOST. CREW CONTINUED TURN AND ESTABLISHED DOG-LEG TO FINAL. MAINTAINING CONSTANT SIGHT OF THE RWY AND EARLIER XCHKING OF THE LOC WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THE OVERSHOOT. LOOKING FOR TFC IN POOR VISIBILITY AND FATIGUE FROM FLYING ALL NIGHT DELAYED EARLIER XCHKING ON FINAL.
