Synopsis

C172 MAKES WRONG TXWY TURN AND ENTERS SGF RWY 2.

Narrative

I CALLED SGF GND CTL ON 121.9 AND GAVE MY POS AND REQUESTED MY IFR CLRNC TO WILEY POST (PWA). I RECEIVED MY CLRNC AND WAS CLRED TO TAXI N TO RWY 2. I TAXIED N AND ACCIDENTALLY TURNED ONTO TXWY C; THEN L ON RWY 2. AS I LOOKED UP AT THE RWY; I SAW A MOONEY ON FINAL; THEN REALIZED WHAT I HAD DONE. I IMMEDIATELY EXITED RWY 2 ON TXWY E; FACED THE TWR AND CALLED GND; TOLD THEM THAT I HAD MADE A MISTAKE. (DURING THIS TIME MOONEY; ON FINAL; ABORTED THE LNDG). GND THEN GAVE ME INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN 180 DEGS ONTO TXWY N AND TAXI TO RWY 2 AGAIN. I THEN FINISHED MY PREFLT AND RUN-UP AND WAS CLR TO DEPART RWY 2. THEN LATER GOT A CALL FROM ZKC TO CALL SGF TWR ONCE I HAD LANDED. THE CTLR SAID THAT FSDO WOULD BE IN CONTACT WITH ME EITHER BY PHONE OR WIRING. THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF WHY THIS MAY HAVE HAPPENED THAT I WAS THINKING TOO MUCH AHEAD AND NOT PAYING CLOSE ATTN TO WHAT I WAS DOING AT THE TIME. I HAVE PUT A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY INTO TRYING TO BE A SAFE; PROFICIENT PLT AND CERTAINLY HOPE IT DOESN'T ALL GO TO WASTE. I DO TRULY REALIZE THE DANGEROUS SIT THAT COULD HAVE ACQUIRED. MY RADIO WAS ON 121.9 THE ENTIRE TIME; AND I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THEY WOULD HAVE CONTACTED ME AS SOON AS I TURNED ONTO RWY 2 AND TOLD ME TO CLR THE RWY. I DO REALIZE THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY OWN ACTIONS; BUT I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THE GND CTLR DIDN'T TAKE ACTION BEFORE I DID. AND BELIEVE ME; IT SCARES THE HECK OUT OF ME TO THINK THAT GND CTLR IS NOT LOOKING OUT FOR SITS LIKE THIS. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES AND NEED TO LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER. IN THE FUTURE; I PLAN TO STUDY THE ARPT DIAGRAM; AND PAY A LOT CLOSER ATTN AND REQUEST PROGRESSIVE TAXI AND MONITOR THE TWR AT THE SAME TIME.
