UNAWARE OF THEIR RELATIVE POS TO TFC AHEAD ON FINAL; FLC GAINED ON SAID TFC; CAUSING THAT TFC'S TCASII TO DISPLAY A CLB RA; RESULTING IN A GAR.
UPON ARR OVER LVM; I WAS GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTION FOR A SKYWEST REGIONAL JET INBOUND ON THE APCH INTO BZN. XING 13 MI E OF THE BZN FIELD; I COULD SEE THE WHOLE ARPT. I TURNED ON ASOS TO GET THE LATEST WX; THEY CALLED 100 FT BROKEN; 3 MI. I COULDN'T CANCEL. I PROCEEDED OVER THE VOR AND STARTED OUTBOUND FOR MANNE (OM) TO HOLD AS PUBLISHED AT 11000 FT. I CONTINUED TO MONITOR THE ASOS WX. UPON ARR AT MANNE; THE CONDITION WENT VFR 8000 FT BROKEN; 3 MI. AT THIS POINT I CANCELED MY IFR WITH CTR; THEY CLRED ME TO BZN TWR. I RPTED THAT I HAD JUST CANCELED WITH CTR AND THAT I WOULD GO AHEAD AND CONTINUE OUTBOUND FOR THE PROC TURN. TWR REPLIED RPT A 4 MI FINAL. I STARTED MY DSCNT 11000 FT; ONLY WENT OUTBOUND FOR 30 SECONDS OR SO AND TURNED OUTBOUND ON THE PROC TURN (ALL IN VFR CONDITIONS) CONTINUING TO LOOSE ALT AND RESETTING BUG'S FOR A VISUAL APCH. I LEVELED OFF AT 6800 FT; SAME AS THE INST APCH; TURNED BACK INBOUND FOR THE ARPT. FOUND MYSELF N OF CTRLINE FOR RWY 12 AND SLOWING TO APCH SPD. I STARTED TO MOVE S TO JOIN CTRLINE WHEN SKYWEST CALLED RA AND STARTED A CLBING R TURN. I PROCEEDED IN AND FOUND CONDITIONS APCHING FROM THE W TO BE MARGINAL BUT VFR. THERE WAS A FOG BANK OBSTRUCTING THE APCH END OF RWY 12; BUT COULD SEE THE REST OF THE RWY OK. I MADE A HIGH APCH TO STAY VISUAL. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: LACK OF CTR AND INFORM ME WHERE SKYWEST WAS ON THE APCH. MY ASSUMPTION: I THOUGHT THAT SKYWEST WOULD HAVE EITHER BEEN ON SHORT FINAL OR LNDG BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE OM. ALSO; REF MY EFC TIME WOULD HAVE EXPIRED. WITHIN 2 MINS OF ME REACHING THE OM; HELP ME TO BELIEVE HE WAS FURTHER ALONG THAN HE WAS. MY OVER-EAGERNESS TO GET IN. I WAS ALREADY 5 HRS LATE; I SHOULDN'T HAVE CANCELED. COM: I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR THEIR POS; BUT WAS CONVINCED HE WAS FURTHER ALONG.
