CFI CONDUCTING A STUDENT PLT'S XCOUNTRY VIOLATED LGA'S CLASS B AIRSPACE AND LATER BECAME CONFUSED WITH HOW TO ENTER THE PATTERN AT FRG. AFTER BEING GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL ATC; THE RPTR SKIRTED HIS RESPONSIBILITY AND HAD HIS CHIEF PLT CALL TO APOLOGIZE TO THE SUPVR.

Narrative

I WAS TAKING MY STUDENT PLT ON HIS SECOND XCOUNTRY TO POU ARPT; DEPARTED FRG. WHILE CLBING OUT FROM FRG CLASS D AIRSPACE; I ASKED MY STUDENT TO REQUEST A FREQ CHANGE AT ABOUT 4500 FT MSL. WE CONTACTED NEW YORK APCH AND TOLD THEM WE REQUIRED VFR ADVISORIES TO POU. THE CTLR SAID 'ARE YOU AWARE YOU ARE IN CLASS B AIRSPACE?' I WAS SURPRISED AND APOLOGIZED TO THE CTLR. HE POINTED OUT AN AIRBUS AT 3 O'CLOCK POS. DURING THAT CONFUSION; I TOOK THE ACFT AND DSNDED TO 3500 FT MSL. THE CTLR ASKED WHY WE DSNDED FROM 4500 FT DOWN TO 3500 FT. I TOLD HIM 'TO AVOID TFC.' THE CTLR GAVE US A VECTOR TO FLY; THEN A FEW MINS LATER; HE PUT US BACK ON COURSE. FROM THAT POINT ON; WE HAD A SUCCESSFUL FLT. ON OUR WAY BACK AT 3000 FT MSL; WE DID NOT REQUEST ANY ADVISORIES. WHEN WE HAD SOME PROBS GETTING INTO FRG; THE CTLR TOLD US TO RPT R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 19. SO; INSTEAD OF FLYING THE REGULAR PROC; WE STARTED OUR OWN DOWNWIND LEG. THAT CAUSED A TFC CONFLICT. WHEN WE LANDED; GND HAD US COPY A PHONE NUMBER FOR NEW YORK APCH (LGA). A PHONE CALL WAS MADE FOR AN APOLOGY TO THE CTLR. ACCORDING TO MY KNOWLEDGE; NO FUTURE ACTIONS WERE TAKEN.
