THE PF; FO; OF A B777 DOES NOT ADHERE TO THE PARAMETERS OF THE UNEXPECTED HOLDING PROC WHEN AIRBORNE 16 HRS AND ON FREQ WITH ZBW; MA.

Narrative

WAITED TOO MANY DAYS TO FILL THIS OUT. BELIEVE WE HELD AT 11000 FT. THE FIX IS ON INBOUND RADIAL TO SPARTA -- DON'T HAVE STAR TO LOOK AT. IT'S JUST AFTER RADIAL FROM GENESEE. WE ENTERED FROM THE W. RECEIVED CLRNC TO HOLD LATE FROM CTR. ENTERED HOLDING PATTERN INFO INTO FMC; CHKED WITH CAPT ON ENTRIES MADE TO FMC AND ENTERED HOLDING NORMALLY. MUCH DISCUSSION IN COCKPIT BOUT OUR MINIMUM FUEL STATUS AND WHETHER TO DIVERT OR NOT. I GLANCED DOWN AT NAV DISPLAY AND NOTICED WE WERE OFF THE PICTURE; SO I STARTED A TURN BACK TO THE HOLDING FIX. DUE TO THE FACT WE HAD BEEN AIRBORNE 16+ HRS BY THIS TIME AND THE DISCUSSION OF DIVERTING; I MISSED MY 1 MIN TIME HACK OUTBOUND AND TURNED IN TOO EARLY ON MY PATTERN ENTRY. WE WERE VECTORED TO THE ARPT AFTER A MINIMUM FUEL CALL TO ATC. NO TFC CONFLICTS OR PROBS; EXCEPT MAYBE TO MY EGO FOR MISSING A SIMPLE HOLDING PATTERN ENTRY. FATIGUE PLAYED A MAJOR FACTOR HERE. IT WAS A GOOD VFR DAY AT NEWARK; YET; AS WE GOT CLOSER; THEY WERE IN A ROUTINE FLT YET NOW AFTER 16+ HRS A ROUTINE LNDG HAD TURNED INTO HOLDING AND THE REAL POTENTIAL OF DIVERTING. FATIGUE SLOWED DOWN THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS. LITTLE THING GET MISSED WHEN YOU ARE TIRED. I WILL MAKE SURE I USE THE TIME HACK ON THE CLOCK TO TIME MY 1 MIN OUTBOUND SO I CAN VISUALLY SEE A MIN WHEN I AM TIRED INSTEAD OF RELYING ON THE BOX AND MEMORY.
