Synopsis

A BE35 PLT RPTED CAUSING A CONFLICT WITH A GULFSTREAM DURING DEP FROM YIP.

Narrative

THIS WAS TO BE A VFR PLEASURE FLT FROM YIP TO BIV. TWR CLRED ME FOR TKOF ON RWY 23L AND R TURN. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF; TWR RPTED NO XPONDER REPLY FROM MY ACFT. I RECYCLED THE MODE SWITCH TO STANDBY AND THEN BACK TO ALT. STILL FOCUSED ON THE XPONDER; I INADVERTENTLY LET THE CLB CONTINUE PAST 2500 FT WHERE I INTENDED TO LEVEL OFF UNTIL OUTSIDE THE DETROIT METRO HORIZ CLASS BOUNDARY. THIS WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTN WHEN TWR CALLED OUT GULFSTREAM TFC ABOUT 2 1/2 MI; 11 O'CLOCK POS; LNDG AT WILLOW RUN; AND SUGGESTED I DSND TO AN ALT OF 2800 FT. I SPOTTED THE GULFSTREAM SOON AFTER THE TWR CALL AND BEGAN A DSCNT TO PASS BELOW THE PATH OF THE OTHER ACFT. THEN; CONSIDERING THE POSSIBLE EFFECT OF ITS WAKE TURB; I DECIDED TO MATCH THE GULFSTREAM'S ALT AND TURN L TO PASS BEHIND IT; MAINTAINING VISUAL SEPARATION UNTIL WELL CLR. I WAS ASKED TO CALL DETROIT METRO TRACON. THE QUALITY ASSURANCE MGR TOLD ME THERE WAS A POSSIBLE CLASS B INCURSION. AT MY RATE OF CLB; I HAD VERY LITTLE TIME BTWN MY INTENDED LEVELOFF ALT AND THE FLOOR OF CLASS B. IN THE FUTURE; WHEN TAKING OFF UNDER CLASS B; I WILL REDUCE RATE OF CLB UPON REACHING A SAFE ALT ABOVE OBSTACLES TO PROVIDE MORE TIME TO DEAL WITH OTHER ISSUES WHICH MIGHT ARISE.
