WRONG DIRECTION TURN ONTO XWIND LEG FOR TOUCH-AND-GO MADE BY PLT TRAINEE IN A C-172RG AT FXE; FL.
I AM A PLT WITH A COMMERCIAL LICENSE WITH AN INST RATING WITH APPROX 500 HRS. ON JUL/TUE/01 I WAS ON A TRAINING FLT IN THE AREA OF FXE. I HAD NOT FLOWN IN OVER 5 YRS AND WAS ATTEMPTING TO GET CURRENT IN MY FLT STATUS. I HAD MADE 2 SEPARATE FLTS IN AREA THAT DAY WITH 1 AT XA00 AND THE OTHER AROUND XD30. I LEFT FXE AT XA00 AND WENT TO THE PRACTICE AREA WITH AN INSTRUCTOR ONBOARD. AFTER ABOUT 1 HR WE RETURNED AND WERE CLRED BY ATC FOR A R DOWNWIND AND BASE TO LAND ON RWY 26. THE SECOND FLT STARTED A SHORT TIME LATER. THE SECOND TRAINING FLT LASTED ABOUT 1 HR (WITH INSTRUCTOR ONBOARD). UPON RETURN; I WAS AGAIN DIRECTED BY ATC TO ENTER A R DOWNWIND AND BASE. ON THIS RETURN; HOWEVER; THE INSTRUCTOR WANTED ME TO DO 'TOUCH-AND-GO' LNDGS. I STARTED MY FIRST 'TOUCH-AND-GO' AND IMMEDIATELY DEPARTED RWY 26. I REACHED 500 FT AND MADE A R TURN; AS I INITIALLY BELIEVED THIS WAS CORRECT. MY INITIAL THOUGHT WAS THAT; BECAUSE I HAD PREVIOUSLY MADE 2 R DOWNWIND AND BASE APCHS TO RWY 26; THAT THIS WAS THE CORRECT TURN. ATC IMMEDIATELY REQUESTED THAT I MAKE AN IMMEDIATE R TURN BACK OVER THE APCH; WHICH I DID. THE INSTRUCTOR INDICATED THAT 'TOUCH-AND-GO' LNDGS AT FXE WERE TO BE WITH A L DOWNWIND PROC; NOT R DOWNWIND. THIS INCIDENT DID NOT CAUSE ANY OTHER ACFT TO HAVE TO DEVIATE; HOWEVER; I FELT THIS RPT SHOULD BE MADE. I HAD NOT FLOWN IN OVER 5 YRS AND I AM 'A LITTLE RUSTY.' THIS FLT WAS TRAINING FOR A RETURN TO CURRENT STATUS. THE MISTAKE OF MAKING A R TURN XWIND WAS INADVERTENT.
