Synopsis

B727 CAPT; DURING LNDG AT MIA; CONTACTED THE RWY WITH THE R WINGTIP.

Narrative

ON APCH TO RWY 9R AT MIA; THE R WINGTIP CONTACTED THE GND. THE APCH WAS NORMAL; THE WX WAS DAY VMC WITH LIGHT WINDS. JUST AS HE WAS FLARING; THE CAPT ANNOUNCED TO THE REST OF THE CREW THAT HE WOULD DEMONSTRATE A XWIND LNDG BY FIRST LNDG ON ONE MAIN WHEEL AND THEN THE OTHER. HE TOUCHED DOWN ON THE L MAIN AND THEN SAID THAT NOW HE IS GOING TO TOUCH DOWN ON THE R MAIN WHEEL. AT THIS POINT; THE ACFT BALLOONED AND WHEN HE TRIED TO PUT THE R MAIN ON THE RWY HE 'OVERCORRECTED' AND THE R WINGTIP STRUCK THE GND. A RAMP CTL VEHICLE WITNESSED THIS AND RADIOED THE TWR. THE TWR ASKED THE PLTS IF WE HAD STRUCK THE WINGTIP AND THEY REPLIED 'NO;' BECAUSE AT THAT TIME WE WERE NOT AWARE THAT CONTACT HAD BEEN MADE WITH THE GND. A VISUAL INSPECTION; ONCE WE WERE PARKED AT THE RAMP; REVEALED THAT INDEED CONTACT HAD BEEN MADE WITH THE #8 SLAT AND THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE WINGTIP. AFTER INVESTIGATION BY COMPANY AND FAA OFFICIALS THE CAPT ACCEPTED FULL RESPONSIBILITY AND EMPHASIZED THAT THE REST OF THE CREW WERE IN NO WAY AT FAULT. OBVIOUSLY THIS MISHAP COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY THE CAPT NOT DEMONSTRATING FLT MANEUVERS IN THE COCKPIT -- THEY SHOULD BE SAVED FOR THE SIMULATOR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 520869: UPON NORMAL LNDG WITH LIGHT VARIABLE WINDS; CAPT WHO WAS FLYING HIS LEG EXERCISED POOR JUDGEMENT BY ATTEMPTING A STUNT UPON LNDG. CAPT UPON TOUCHING DOWN STATED 'HERE'S A 1 WHEEL LNDG.' AFTER LNDG ON THE L MAIN WHEELS CAPT ATTEMPTED TO PERFORM THE SAME MANEUVER ON THE R MAINS. AT THIS POINT THE FO ATTEMPTED CORRECTING BACK TO WINGS LEVEL BUT CAPT'S EXCESSIVE CTL INPUTS TO THE R CAUSED THE R WINGTIP TO CONTACT RWY. SLIGHT DAMAGE TO R WINGTIP WAS DONE UPON POSTFLT INSPECTION. OCCURRENCE COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY CAPT MAINTAINING SAFETY AND NOT ATTEMPTING STUNTS IN THE ACFT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 520779: UPON TOUCHING DOWN DURING A NORMAL XWIND LNDG; I ENCOUNTERED A STRONG UNEXPECTED WIND GUST. I CORRECTED TO MAINTAIN CTRLINE OF RWY AND CONTACTED THE RWY WITH MY R WINGTIP. IF I HAD PLANTED THE AIRPLANE FIRMLY ON THE GND SOONER; THIS EVENT MAY HAVE NOT HAPPENED; AND IF I HAD USED MORE RUDDER THAN AILERON; THIS WOULD HAVE KEPT THE WING UP.
