Synopsis

SMA PLT RECEIVING INSTRUCTION DSNDS NEAR COUNTY FAIRGROUND TO GET A BETTER LOOK AT THE AREA.

Narrative

WE DECIDED TO FLY TO FULTON COUNTY ARPT. MY STUDENT WAS IN THE L SEAT RECEIVING INSTRUCTION; I WAS IN THE R SEAT AND ANOTHER CFI WAS IN THE BACK. IT WAS A CRYSTAL CLR DAY AND THE WX WAS PERFECT. WE CHOSE TO GO VFR AND BECAUSE OF THE NEW FLT RESTRS; WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO GO AROUND ATLANTA CLASS B AIRSPACE. ON THE WAY TO FULTON WE PASSED OVER THE FAYETTE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS. WHEN WE SAW THE FAIR; MY STUDENT DSNDED TO GET CLOSER FOR A BETTER LOOK. MY STUDENT GOT MUCH LOWER THAN I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO AND LOWER THAN I SHOULD HAVE LET HIM. I DID NOT TAKE THE CTLS FROM HIM AT THIS POINT BECAUSE HE IS AN EXCELLENT PLT AND AT THE TIME I SAW NO REAL DANGER. AS WE PASSED THE FAIRGROUNDS WE CONTINUED AROUND THE CLASS B AIRSPACE USING DME OFF THE ATLANTA VOR AND CERTAIN LANDMARKS THAT THE CFI IN THE BACK KNEW WOULD KEEP US CLR OF CLASS B. WE CALLED FULTON TWR ABOUT 10-15 MI OUT AND STATED OUR INTENTIONS. TWR WAS MADE CLR OF OUR MISSION AND WE WERE TOLD TO EXPECT RWY 26. WE SET UP FOR RWY 26; AND WERE CLRED TO LAND. AFTER LNDG WE CLRED THE RWY; CONTACTED GND AND WENT TO FBO. AFTER A FEW MINS WE DECIDED TO HEAD BACK HOME. WE WENT THE SAME WAY HOME AS WE DID COMING. ONCE AGAIN WE CROSSED OVER THE FAIRGROUNDS AND MY STUDENT DECIDED TO DSND AGAIN. AT THIS POINT I TOLD HIM WE WERE LOW ENOUGH AND AFTER XING THE FAIR WE CONTINUED HOME. MY EXPERIENCE HAS ENFORCED THE IMPORTANCE OF ALT TO MYSELF AS A PLT AND MANY OTHERS.
