B777-200 CREW HAD ENG FAILURE AND DIVERTED FOR AN EMER LNDG.

Narrative

FO WAS PF. CAPT WAS PNF. FL370 FELT TURB/VIBRATION THEN STATUS MSG. EEC C1 LEFT ENG CTL. FLT ATTENDANT RPTED HEARING LOUD NOISE FROM LEFT ENG. RELIEF PLT RETURNED TO FLT DECK AND GOT COM WITH DISPATCH; ACR MAINT CTL; PRATT & WHITNEY; BOEING. ALL LEFT ENG INDICATION SEEMED NORMAL EXCEPT FF; WHICH WAS AT 1200 LBS LEFT. THROTTLE WAS MOVED MANUALLY TO SEE STATUS AND THEN REALIZED ENG WAS AT IDLE. THROTTLE HAD NO ENG RESPONSE. CENTER WAS ADVISED AND FL240 REQUIRED. DRIFT DOWN CHECKLIST WAS COMPLETED. AT FL240 ENG SEVERE DAMAGE CHECKLIST WAS RUN UP TO FUEL CTLR OFF; DECIDED IDLE THRUST WAS BETTER THAN NONE; BUT MONITORED EGT CLOSELY. DECISION WAS MADE TO LAND AT ZZZZ; DUMPED 33000 LBS FUEL WITH CENTER AGREEMENT. FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX BRIEFED. 40 N ZZZZ ENG WAS SHUT DOWN; KEPT GETTING NUISANCE ENG FAIL EICAS DUE TO FLUCTUATING RPMS. WX CLR AND CALM WINDS AT ZZZZ. NON EVENT LANDING; EMER EQUIP WAS REQUESTED BUT NOT NEEDED. EXCELLENT CRM AMONG ALL CREW MEMBERS/COCKPIT AND CAB. EVERYONE ENCOURAGED TO PITCH IN AND FINAL DECISION WAS AGREED UPON BY ALL INCLUDING DISPATCH.
