Synopsis

A300 CAPT HAS BECOME PARANOID ABOUT BEING ASSIGNED TO FLY A PARTICULAR ACFT WITH A MAINT HISTORY OF CTL PROBS.

Narrative

CREW SCHEDULE COERCION. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM CREW SCHEDULING AT HOME AT ABOUT XA20. I WAS UNABLE TO GET TO THE CALL; BUT THEREAFTER LOOKED UP ON THE COMPUTER AND DISCOVERED I WAS NEEDED TO FERRY AN A300 FROM ZZZ TO ZZZ1 IN THE LATE EVENING. I IMMEDIATELY SOUGHT GUIDANCE FROM SEVERAL SOURCES; DUE TO MY UNEASE REGARDING THIS TAIL NUMBER. I DISCOVERED THAT THIS ACFT WAS NOT THE TAIL NUMBER OF THE DAMAGED ACFT. LATER THAT DAY; I RECEIVED AN ASSIGNMENT FROM CREW SCHEDULING TO FERRY AN ACFT TO ZZZ1 EARLY THE NEXT MORNING. I MADE A FEW INQUIRIES TO ZZZ MGR AND ZZZ1 AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO DISCREPANCIES. I TOOK THE FERRY AND LEARNED UPON ARR THAT I HAD JUST BROUGHT IN ACFT XYZ -- THE DAMAGED AIRBUS. NEEDLESS TO SAY; I WAS QUITE LIVID THAT I COULD NOT BE MADE PRIVY TO THAT INFO. I KNEW I NEEDED TO RETURN CREW SCHEDULING'S CALL; AND FINALLY DID SO WITHIN 40 MINS OF THEIR FIRST ATTEMPTED CONTACT. MEANWHILE; I HAD GOTTEN THE BALL ROLLING REGARDING MY CONCERNS BY CALLING UNION REPRESENTATIVES. CREW SCHEDULING MENTIONED THAT HE HAD SENT A SLIP TO THE CHIEF PLT THAT I HADN'T CALLED HIM WITHIN 20 MINS. WE BOTH REMARKED THAT THAT ARBITRARY TIME LIMIT WAS NOT IN THE CONTRACT. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY MGR AND TOLD HIM ABOUT MY DISCOMFORT; AND HE ULTIMATELY SAID NOT TO DO ANYTHING UNTIL I SPOKE TO SUPVR X AND THAT IF MY QUESTIONS WERE SATISFACTORILY ANSWERED; I SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY REASON NOT TO FLY THE TRIP. I AGREED. I THEN WAITED ABOUT 20 MINS. MY MGR CALLED BACK SAYING SUPVR X WAS IN A MEETING AND I'D HAVE TO SPEAK TO HIM IN ZZZ. CREW SCHEDULING CALLED WHILE I WAS TALKING TO MY MGR AND I EXCUSED MYSELF TO LET THE SCHEDULER KNOW WHAT MY BOSS HAD INSTRUCTED ME TO DO. NOW HERE'S THE CRUX OF THE PROB: THE SCHEDULER TOLD ME HE HAD BEEN INSTRUCTED TO FIN A REPLACEMENT FOR ME. HOW DO THEY KNOW IF ANY CAPT IS GOING TO FLY BEFORE HE CHKS THE LOGBOOK. THAT LED ME TO BELIEVE FURTHER THAT THERE WAS MUCH MORE TO THIS UNDER THE SURFACE. THE SCHEDULER TOLD ME THAT THE MGR TOLD HIM TO GIVE THE FLT TO PLT X. I ASKED HIM TO HAVE PLT X CALL ME; BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT HIM TO THINK I WAS SHIRKING MY RESPONSIBILITY HIS WAY. PLT X WAS VERY CONCERNED THAT CREW SCHEDULING WAS TREATING HIM AS A STANDBY. I ENDED THE CALL WITH 'PLT X.' I CALLED THE SCHEDULER AGAIN; AND I TOLD HIM THAT MY BOSS EXPECTED ME TO DEADHEAD TO ZZZ AND ASK MY QUESTIONS THERE. I ASKED HIM TO PUT THE MGR ON; AND I EXPLAINED TO HIM ALL OF THE ABOVE. HE SAID FOR ME NOT TO GO ANYWHERE UNLESS I HEARD BACK FROM WHICH (WHICH I HAVEN'T AS YET 1 1/2 HRS LATER).
