Synopsis

A B737-500 CREW; AFTER LNDG AT BUR; TAXIED PAST THE LAST TURNOFF; REQUIRING A TOW TO THE GATE.

Narrative

WE DEPARTED WITH 122 PAX ON BOARD. THE FO WAS FLYING THE LEG; DEP; ENRTE; ARR WERE NORMAL. HE TOUCHED DOWN AT ABOUT 127 KTS (ON SPD) AT ABOUT XA48. I TOOK THE BRAKES AT THE 80 KT CALL AND THE ACFT AFTER THE REVERSERS WERE STOWED. WE WERE HEADED FOR GATE X AND I TOLD THE FO THAT WE WOULD ROLL TO THE END. I NOTICED THE 'QUICK SAND' ARRESTING AREA STRAIGHT AHEAD AND AN MD80 PARKED AT GATE Y WHICH WE WOULD TURN SHORT OF IN THE TURN. WE WERE AT TAXI/TURNOFF SPD WHEN THE FO SAID THAT WE HAD MISSED THE LAST TURNOFF. WE CROSSED THE END OF THE RWY INTO THE OVERRUN; STOPPING SHORT OF THE 'QUICK SAND.' I ASKED IF WE COULD TURN R ONTO THE RAMP. THE FO SAID NO. I STARTED TO GO L ONTO A CONCRETE PAD ON THE NE CORNER OF THE ARPT. NOT CERTAIN IF THE PAD WAS STRESSED FOR US; I CALLED TWR. THEY SAID TO HOLD OUR POS AND THEY WOULD SEND HELP. THE SUPERINTENDENT OF ARPT OPS ARRIVED AND RECOMMENDED TOW TO THE GATE. THIS WE DID; ARRIVING AT XA58. I SPOKE THEN WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT OF ARPT OPS AND THE COMPANY OPS SUPVR. PUSHED NEXT FLT WITH 122 PAX AT XC23. WE CONFERRED ON THE WAY TO SJC AND I CALLED DISPATCH AND ASKED FOR THE CHIEF PLT ON DUTY. SPOKE WITH ONE; AGREED TO FILE RPTS. SPOKE WITH ANOTHER NAME AT ABOUT AM30 THE NEXT DAY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 538680: AS WE TAXIED BY THE TURN IN LINE FOR GATE; I TOLD THE CAPT WE MISSED THE TURN IN. HE APPLIED BRAKES; BUT THE ACFT DID NOT STOP UNTIL MAIN MOUNTS WERE 15 FT INTO THE OVERRUN OF RWY 8.
