AFTER EXPERIENCING A PRIMARY ELECTRICAL PWR SUPPLY PROB; A PA28-235 LOW TIME PVT PLT LWOC AT GUS AFB; IN.
ON FEB/THU/02; APPROX AT XA00; I EXPERIENCED AN UNUSUAL NOISE IN MY HEADSET. FEW MINS LATER; MY COMS WENT OFF-LINE. GUESSING I WAS ABOUT 30 MI FROM KOKOMO; IN; I RESET MY COMPASS OFF MY GPS AND WITHIN SECONDS MY GPS WENT OFF-LINE. AT THAT TIME I KNEW I HAD LOST MY DC PWR; SO I HEADED FOR KOKOMO WITHOUT ANY RADIO; VOR; GPS ABILITY. I TOOK A LOOK AT MY FUEL WHICH I HAD THOUGHT WAS IN GOOD SHAPE; BUT WITH THE PWR OFF; THEY (4) ALL INDICATED EMPTY. SO MY INTENT WAS TO LAND AT OKK; BUT MUST HAVE DRIFTED OFF COURSE AND MISSED OKK (ACTUALLY HAD 60+ GALLONS OF FUEL). AT THAT POINT I HOPED I WOULD FIND PERU (I76) BUT WITH IT GETTING DUSK WITH 3 PAX AND NO INSTS; I HAD MADE UP MY MIND THAT AT THE NEXT ARPT I WAS GOING TO LAND. I MADE VISUAL CONTACT WITH AN ARPT; SO I APCHED DOWNWIND ON A 45 DEG ANGLE LOOKING FOR TFC; TURNED L BASE; FINAL ON RWY 23; LANDED; QUICKLY TURNED OFF ON TXWY B AND PULLED UP TO TWR. I COULD SEE NO ONE WAS IN THE TWR (OLD CIVILIAN) AND COULD SEE THE 3 OR 4 C135'S SITTING OVER ON THE RAMP. HAD A CELL PHONE; SO CALLED 911 AND ASKED IF THEY WOULD NOTIFY GRISSOM TWR (ACROSS RWY W END OF ARPT FROM ME). AUTHS ARRIVED A FEW MINS LATER. LET AFB PAX CALL BACK TO OHIO TO SEND TRANSPORTATION BACK. I LEFT PLANE AT GUS; HAD A MECH'S PHONE NUMBER GIVEN TO ME FROM AN AIR FORCE OFFICER WHO WAS A CFI AT OKK TO REPAIR MY ALTERNATOR FRIDAY MORNING. HAD A PLT BASED AT MY ARPT (VTA) TO FLY ME TO OKK FRIDAY AFTER WORK. MECH AND I DROVE OVER TO GUS. I RECEIVED PERMISSION TO DEPART AND FLY BACK TO VTA.
