MD SUPER 80 CAPT BECAME DISTR WITH SMOKE COMING FROM A DEPARTING B777 AND ALLOWED THE ACFT TO ROLL 2 FT PAST THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINE BEFORE THE FO CALLED IT TO HIS ATTN.
LOCATION: HOLD SHORT RWY 17R DEN. I WAS THE CAPT ON THIS S80 FLT. WHILE AWAITING TKOF ON RWY 17R IN DEN; I NOTICED SOME POSSIBLE SMOKE COMING FROM THE R MAIN GEAR TRUCK OF A DEPARTING B777. I ASKED TWR TO ALERT THE B777 AND HAVE HIM CHK HIS BRAKE TEMPS; AS I SUSPECTED A DRAGGING BRAKE. I OBVIOUSLY GOT TOO PREOCCUPIED WATCHING AND LISTENING FOR THE CALL TO THE B777; AND THE FO ALERTLY OBSERVED I WAS DRIFTING ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT. THE FO ASKED IF WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. I SAID WE WERE NOT AND RESET THE PARKING BRAKE. (THE FO ALSO CONFIRMED WE WERE NOT CLRED WITH TWR.) AFTER I STOPPED; THE NOSE OF THE ACFT APPEARED TO BE OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE BY ABOUT 2 FT. (A B737 DEPARTED RWY 17R AFTER THE B777.) THERE WAS AN ARRIVING PROP ACFT ON FINAL FOR LNDG AFTER THE B737 DEPARTED. IN MY JUDGEMENT; THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH THE ARRIVING PROP DUE TO MY ACFT'S NOSE POS; AND THE PROP SUBSEQUENTLY LANDED. THE CAUSE OF THIS EVENT WAS THAT I ALLOWED MYSELF TO GET DISTR FROM MY PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY OF CTLING MY ACFT. I WILL BE MORE FOCUSED IN THE FUTURE; AND MORE ALERT TO UNNECESSARY DISTRS OF THIS SORT. THANKS TO MY FO FOR HIS KEEN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND QUICK RESPONSE.
