Synopsis

AN M20P PLT; TAXIING FOR TKOF AT DXR; TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE.

Narrative

AFTER I RESTARTED; I CALLED GND FOR TAXI CLRNC. RECEIVED CLRNC 'TAXI RWY 26.' I RELEASED BRAKES AND ENTERED THE TXWY MAKING A SLIGHT L TURN TOWARDS THE TAXI PATH TOWARDS THE ENTRANCE TO THE RWY. AFTER TRAVELING SEVERAL PLANE LENGTHS; I REALIZED THAT THERE WERE NO HOLD SHORT LINES AHEAD OF ME BTWN MY PRESENT POS AND WHAT I REALIZED MUST BE THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD PORTION OF RWY 26. I IMMEDIATELY BRAKED TO A STOP. JUST AFTER I STOPPED; I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE GND CTLR TO 'HOLD SHORT.' FORTUNATELY; I WASN'T SO CLOSE TO THE RWY AS TO INTERFERE WITH OPS. THE CTLR THEN ASKED ME TO CHANGE TO TWR FREQ AND TWR TOLD ME TO 'CONTINUE TO HOLD SHORT FOR LNDG TFC.' 30 SECONDS OR SO LATER A LIGHT SINGLE ON APCH LANDED NORMALLY; PASSING WELL AHEAD OF MY POS AND STILL AT AN ALT OF 100-150 FT. ONCE THE LNDG PLANE HAD PASSED; THE TWR CTLR CLRED ME FOR TKOF. THE PROB; OF COURSE; ORIGINATED BECAUSE I CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINES WITHOUT A CLRNC. AS TO WHY I DID; IT WAS BECAUSE I REALLY WASN'T LOOKING FOR THEM AT THE TIME BTWN WHEN I RELEASED THE BRAKES AND; VERY SOON THEREAFTER; CROSSED THE LINES. I DID NOT EXPECT THEM TO BE LOCATED WHERE THEY WERE AND SO I THINK I WAS PREDISPOSED TO NOT 'SEE' THEM. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS ARE MANY: THE LOCATION OF THE HOLD SHORT LINES A LONG WAY FROM THE RWY; THE ODD ANGLE THAT THEY CROSS THE TXWY; NO OBVIOUS RUNUP PAD BTWN MY PARKED LOCATION AND THE RWY (I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT THERE IS A RUN-UP PAD LOCATED ALONG THE TXWY IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE RWY AS VIEWED FROM WHERE THE FBO'S RAMP MEETS THE TXWY); MY UNFAMILIARITY WITH AN UNUSUAL ARPT/TXWY CONFIGN; AND THE TIME OF DAY (JUST AFTER SUNSET THE LIGHTING CONDITIONS MADE IT THAT MUCH EASIER FOR ME TO MISS THE HOLD SHORT LINES). I HAD BEEN TO THIS ARPT A FEW TIMES IN THE PAST AND EVEN BEEN TO THIS FBO BEFORE; BUT I THINK THE HOLD SHORT LINES HAVE BEEN RELOCATED; THIS TOO MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO MY EXPECTATION THAT THEY WERE LOCATED IN A DIFFERENT PLACE THAN THEY WERE. THE CTLR'S TAXI CLRNC SEEMED TO BE STRAIGHTFORWARD: 'TAXI RWY 26;' BUT I TREATED IT TOO CASUALLY AND TURNED IT INTO A TRAP. I PLAN TO EXAMINE EVERY INCH OF TXWY IN FRONT OF ME AND TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED.
