Synopsis

A NIGHT OP HARD LNDG ON RWY 19 IN AN FK100 AFTER CHANGING FROM THE LDA DME RWY 19 APCH TO AN APCH USING THE RIVER VISUAL RWY 19 AT DCA; DC.

Narrative

LOCATION: DCA RWY 19. AFTER BRIEFING FOR THE LDA 19 APCH TO DCA; WE BROKE OUT UNDER AN OVCST IN NIGHT VMC AND WERE ASSIGNED THE RIVER VISUAL APCH RWY 19. I WAS THE PNF. THE FO WAS NEW ON THE ACFT AND HAD NEVER FLOWN INTO DCA. AFTER A SHORT BRIEFING ON THE VISUAL APCH; WE REALIZED THAT WE WERE HIGH. I WAS COACHING THE FO AS I CONFIGURED THE ACFT FOR LNDG. I HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT AS WE STARTED DOWN THE RIVER. THE FO WAS HAVING TROUBLE SEEING THE RWY. WE WERE ON GLIDE PATH AS WE TURNED SHORT FINAL BUT WE LANDED QUITE HARD. I REALIZED AFTERWARD THAT I HAD COACHED THE FO INTO AN UNSTABILIZED APCH THAT RESULTED IN A HARD LNDG. MAINT INSPECTED THE ACFT AND FOUND NO DAMAGE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 545809: WE WERE HIGH FOR THE VISUAL AND I DID NOT HAVE THE APCH PLATE OUT. I LOOKED FOR THE PLATE FOR A MIN; AT WHICH POINT THE CAPT GAVE ME HIS. WE WERE HIGH; DSNDING; AND BEHIND THE ACFT. I KEPT DSNDING ON THE CAPT'S GUIDANCE. WE CONFIGURED AND I SAW THE AIRFIELD LATE; ALTHOUGH WE WERE ON CTRLINE AND GLIDE PATH. BOTTOM LINE IS: I WAS NOT STABILIZED ON THE APCH AND WE LANDED HARD. THE CAPT WROTE IT UP AS A SUSPECTED HARD LNDG.
