Synopsis

AN LTT CREW; TAXIING FOR TKOF AT PIE; TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE.

Narrative

WE RECEIVED BOTH CLRNC TO TAXI AND OUR CLRNC TO FXE. WE STARTED OUR TAXI TO RWY 35R FROM OUR CTR. THE CTR HAS 2 EXITS ON THEIR RAMP; ONE TO THE S AND ONE TO THE E. THE EBOUND EXIT DUMPS ONTO RWY 35L. THE CAPT (PF) HAD HIS HAND DOWN PROGRAMMING THE FMS WHILE TAXIING OUT. I PUT MY HAND DOWN TO GRAB THE CHKLIST WHICH HAD SLID UNDER THE THROTTLE QUADRANT. WHEN I LOOKED UP; I SAW THE RWY AHEAD OF US AND AT THE SAME MOMENT THE CAPT LOOKED UP AND SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. WHEN THE ACFT CAME TO A STOP; WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE BY APPROX 1/2 THE ACFT LENGTH. WE CALLED GND AND THEY ANNOUNCED OUR CLRNC TO BACK TAXI DOWN RWY 35L. HAD RWY 35L BEEN ACTIVE; IT COULD HAVE BEEN A RWY INCURSION. WE HAVE DISCUSSED THE PROB AND CONCLUDED THAT IN THE FUTURE THE PF WILL TAXI THE ACFT AND THE PNF WILL HANDLE TASKS LIKE FMS; CHKLIST; RETRIEVING CHARTS; ETC. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: WE HAD A MEETING IN FT LAUDERDALE SO WE WERE RUSHED AND AT AN UNFAMILIAR ARPT. HAD WE STOPPED ON THE RAMP TO PROGRAM THE FMS AND LOOKED OVER THE ARPT DIAGRAM; THIS EVENT SURELY WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED.
