C182 PLT BECOMES DISORIENTED DURING ARPT ARR AFTER LNDG. HE ALSO BECAME CONFUSED ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF THE LOCATION OF THE FBO TO WHICH HE WAS GOING.

Narrative

FLT WAS FROM MEV TO RNO. INITIAL CONTACT WITH RNO APCH WAS OVER CARSON CITY; 12 NM S OF CLASS C AIRSPACE. CTLR ASKED IF I HAD ATIS INFO -- I DID NOT (ERROR #1). CTLR GAVE ME INFO AND SAID LNDGS AND TKOFS WERE ON RWY 16L (I THINK CTLR INITIALLY SAID RWY 34L AND THEN CORRECTED TO RWY 16L). CTLR ASKED DEST ON GND AT RENO. I SAID 'FBO X.' WITHIN 2 NM; CTLR ASKED IF I WAS OVER N END OF WASHOE -- HE WAS RECEIVING PRIMARY TARGET; BUT NO XPONDER. MY XPONDER WAS ON 'STANDBY.' I SWITCHED ON; IDENTED PER CTLR'S REQUEST; AND RPTED MY ALT. MY MENTAL PICTURE WAS NOW TO FLY L PATTERN FOR RWY 34L; WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN L PATTERN FOR RWY 16L. AS I FLEW UP W SIDE TOWARDS ARPT; APCH GAVE ME AN E VECTOR. I ASSUME THIS WAS BASE FOR LONG FINAL ON RWY 34L. AS I TURNED ONTO FINAL RWY 34L; CTLR VECTORED ME TO E AGAIN AND TO CONTACT TWR. IT WAS THEN I REALIZED THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN LNDG RWY 16L. I WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 16L; #2 BEHIND CESSNA TFC. I DID NOT SEE THE TFC UNTIL ALMOST READY TO TURN FINAL; REALIZED THAT I WAS TOO CLOSE BEHIND THE TFC; BUT TURNED BEHIND THE TFC ON FINAL AS I DID NOT WANT TO ENTER FINAL APCH PATH OF RWY 16R. I REQUESTED TO CIRCLE FOR SPACING. THE TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO GO AROUND AND REMAIN E OF RWY. I EXECUTE GAR. AFTER PASSING OVER RWY 25; TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO RE-ENTER L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 16L. SHORTLY AFTER I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 16L; CAUTION WAKE TURB FOR MD80 LNDG PARALLEL ON RWY 16R. I LANDED LONG TO AVOID WAKE TURB AND ROLLED OUT TO TXWY L; MAKING A R ONTO TXWY L. AS I WAS DOING THIS; I WAS EXPECTING INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE TWR AS HE WAS CLRING AN ACFT FOR TKOF ON RWY 16R AND I DID NOT WANT TO ENTER THE RWY (RWY 16R). I PLANNED TO CLR THE RWY BOUNDARY MARKING (OF RWY 16L) AND STOP. ABOUT 10 FT FROM THE RWY BOUNDARY MARKING; TWR SAID; 'TURN L; TURN L' AND I REVERSED DIRECTION AND CROSSED RWY 16L/34R ON TXWY L. THE TWR INFORMED ME THAT FBO X IS ON THE E SIDE OF FIELD; WHICH I THEN REALIZED FOR THE FIRST TIME. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: POOR CHKLIST USE. I DID NOT BRIEF ARPT DIAGRAM. I HEARD WHAT I WANTED (RWY 34L); NOT WHAT THEY SAID (RWY 16L). CTLR DID NOT INSTRUCT TXWY TURNOFF DURING ROLLOUT (PLT SHOULD HAVE ASKED; ALTHOUGH RADIO WAS BUSY).
