Synopsis

DC10-30 CREW HAD A MAINT RELEASE TIME EXPIRE BEFORE THE FLT GOT TO THE DEST STATION.

Narrative

RECEIVING THE MAINT RELEASE DURING PREFLT; I NOTICED IT WAS GOING TO EXPIRE BEFORE I LANDED AT THE FINAL DEST. I HAD THE SO CALL MAINT ON RADIO; AND HAD MAINT COME TO ACFT. WHEN THEY ARRIVED; I SHOWED THEM WHERE THE MAINT RELEASE DOCUMENT WOULD EXPIRE BEFORE FINAL DEST; AND TOLD THE MECH TO COMPLETE THE 'PART II' SVC CHK AND GIVE ME A NEW MAINT RELEASE WITH THE NEW LATER EXPIRATION DATE. THE PART II SVC CHK IS WHAT WAS GOING TO EXPIRE. MECH SAID OK; AND LEFT TO DO THE INSPECTION. ABOUT 20 MINS LATER; HE RETURNED WITH A NEW MAINT RELEASE AND SAID HE HAD COMPLETED THE PART II CHK AND ANNOTATED IT ON THE NEW MAINT RELEASE. I CHKED THE NEW MAINT RELEASE AND WAS SATISFIED IT WOULD NOT EXPIRE BEFORE DEST; AND DEPARTED. I FLEW AS SCHEDULED FROM MEM TO LCK TO MSP. WE BLOCKED IN TO MSP AT XA40. AFTER ARRIVING AT THE LAYOVER HOTEL; I GOT A CALL FROM MSP MAINT SAYING THAT MAINT CTLR IN MEM CALLED OUT THE ACFT; FLEW ILLEGALLY INTO MSP BECAUSE MAINT RELEASE EXPIRED AT XA00. I WAS 40 MINS PAST EXPIRATION. I EXPLAINED HOW I HAD THE INSPECTION COMPLETED BEFORE I LEFT MEM; BUT WAS TOLD 'MEM SCREWED YOU.' ALL THEY DID WAS A TIRE CHK; NOT A COMPLETE PART II CHK; AND THE MECH UPDATED MY MAINT RELEASE; BUT NOT IN THE COMPUTER BECAUSE HE NEVER COMPLETED IT. I HAD RELIED ON WHAT I WAS TOLD -- SO EVIDENTLY MY PAPERWORK DID NOT AGREE WITH MAINT CTLR AND THE ACFT INSPECTION EXPIRED 40 MINS BEFORE BLOCK-IN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 549073: THE CAPT WAS BUSY WHEN HE WAS HANDED THE LOGBOOK AND AIRWORTHINESS RELEASE. THE MECH SAID EVERYTHING WAS TAKEN CARE OF. THE CAPT BRIEFLY LOOKED TO SEE IF THE MECH HAD SIGNED THE LOGBOOK AND HE SAW A NEW TIME AND DATE ON THE SVC CHK. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE PART I SVC CHK WHICH IS NOTHING MORE THAN A TIRE PRESSURE CHK. WE LANDED IN LCK WHERE ANOTHER MECH REVIEWED OUR LOGBOOK AND DID NOT CATCH THE MISTAKE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS INSTANCES OF COMPANY DOING JUST THIS SORT OF THING.
