Synopsis

B737-200 FIRE WARNING AT CRUISE RESULTS IN EMER DECLARATION; ENG SHUTDOWN AND UNEVENTFUL SINGLE ENG LNDG.

Narrative

ENG FIRE WARNING AND SHUTDOWN. DURING CRUISE FLT; THE #2 ENG FIRE WARNING LIGHT; THE FIRE WARNING BELL; AND THE MASTER FIRE WARNING LIGHT BEGAN TO FLICKER. AT FIRST IT WAS SLOW; BUT THEY BEGAN TO FLICKER MORE OFTEN AND STAY ON LONGER. NEARING THE TOP OF DSCNT; THE FIRE BELL CAME ON STEADY AND WOULD NOT SILENCE UNLESS HELD SINCE THE WARNINGS WERE STILL INTERMITTENT. AFTER BRINGING THE PWR BACK FOR DSCNT; ALL WARNINGS BECAME STEADY. WE WERE ABLE TO SILENCE THE BELL AND WE RAN THE ENG FIRE CHKLIST. AFTER FIRING BOTH BOTTLES; THE ENG FIRE WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED SO I NOTIFIED ATC THAT WE WERE DECLARING AN EMER DUE TO ENG FAILURE. PREPARING FOR LNDG WE: INFORMED THE FLT ATTENDANTS; CONTACTED BOTH OPS AND DISPATCH; ACCOMPLISHED THE 1-ENG INOP APCH AND FINAL DSCNT CHKLISTS; FIGURED PERFORMANCE DATA FOR A FLAPS 15 DEG LNDG; REQUESTED EMER EQUIP TO STAND BY; AND MADE A PA ADVISING THE PAX OF OUR SIT AND TRIED TO ASSURE THEM OF A NORMAL AND SAFE LNDG. THE SINGLE ENG APCH AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL AND THE FIRE WARNING LIGHT EXTINGUISHED AFTER LNDG. SO WE TAXIED TO OUR GATE WITHOUT FURTHER ASSISTANCE.
