Synopsis

RWY INCURSION OCCURS WHEN THE PIC OF AN EMB120 LNDG ON RWY 5 ELECTS TO USE ACTIVE RWY 31 FOR HIS TURNOFF AT MCN; GA.

Narrative

ON LNDG ROLLOUT; I (THE CAPT) TOOK CTLS FROM THE FO AND BECAME PF ON GND IN MCN ARPT ON RWY 5. THE WINDS WERE FAVORING RWY 31 THOUGH OUR WT; TEMP; AND PERFORMANCE DICTATED USE OF RWY 5. HAVING BEEN IN MCN HUNDREDS OF TIMES AND 99 TIMES OUT OF 100; RWY 5 OR RWY 23 IS ACTIVE AND WHEN LNDG ON RWY 5; 99 TIMES OUT OF 100; TWR ADVISES US TO TURN L ONTO RWY 13/31; EXIT AT THE END; AND TAXI TO THE GATE. I ANTICIPATED THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS AS MANY TIMES BEFORE. SO I BEGAN TO EXIT L ON RWY 13/31. JUST AS I WAS CLR OF RWY 5 ON RWY 13/31; I STOPPED; REALIZING MY MISTAKE. WE THEN GOT PERMISSION TO CONTINUE OUR TAXI TO THE GATE. ANOTHER THING WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO MY QUICK AND WRONG DECISION WAS THAT ON LNDG ROLLOUT; TWR CLRED A LEARJET INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 5 RIGHT BEHIND US AND SO I WANTED TO CLR THE RWY ASAP. MY HASTE; COMPLACENCY; AND REPETITION WERE TO BLAME FOR THIS INCURSION. I HAVE SINCE SET A NEW PROC IN MY FLYING -- NEVER TO EXIT ON ANY RWY ANYMORE REGARDLESS IF I HAVE PERMISSION FROM ATC. THIS WILL BREAK THE REPETITION CYCLE. COMPLACENCY AND REPETITION CAUSED THE PROB. BREAKING THE HABIT OF EXITING ON RWYS; EVEN WITH ATC'S PERMISSION; IS THE SOLUTION. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 554546: HE ELECTED TO USE RWY 31 TO TAXI IN TO THE RAMP (WE HAD NO CLRNC). I VOICED CONCERN ABOUT THE TURNOFF; THE ACFT WAS STOPPED; AND TWR CONTACTED. MCN TWR'S RESPONSE WAS 'TAXI TO THE RAMP.'
