A HUSKY 1 PLT MAKES AN OFF ARPT PRECAUTIONARY LNDG WHEN HIS CYLINDER HEAD TEMP INDICATOR READS HIGHER THAN NORMAL AND THE ENG APPEARS TO BE RUNNING ROUGHER THAN NORMAL NEAR Q99; CA.

Narrative

I WAS FLYING AT CRUISE PWR SETTING WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE CHT AND IEGT READINGS WERE WELL ABOVE NORMAL! THE ENG SEEMED TO BE RUNNING ROUGHER THAN NORMAL AND THE CHT READING DID NOT GO DOWN WITH A REDUCTION OF PWR. I WAS OVER MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN WITH THE NEAREST ARPT ABOUT 8 NM. I SAW AN OPEN AREA BELOW THAT WAS PART OF A DIRT ROAD AND DECIDED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG. I MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG ON THE ROAD AND AFTER SOME TIME THE ENG AND CHT/EGT APPEARED NORMAL. I SAW NO ONE AND DECIDED TO TAKE OFF. AFTER CLBOUT; I NOTICED THE CHT AND EGT CLB VERY FAST AND AS I CIRCLED NEAR THE LNDG AREA; SPOTTED A VEHICLE. THE CHT AND EGT REMAINED HIGH AND I DECIDED TO LAND AND ASK FOR ASSISTANCE. MY SECOND ATTEMPT TO LAND WAS TOO FAST SO I DECIDED TO ABORT THE LNDG ATTEMPT. ON CLBOUT I STAYED CLOSE TO THE LNDG AREA AND THE CHT AND EGT BEGAN FLUCTUATING UP AND DOWN. ON REACHING ABOUT 8000 FT MSL; I FLEW TO THE NEAREST ARPT AND LANDED. THE CHT/EGT BEGAN READING NORMAL AND I DID NOT NOTICE ANY INDICATION OF HEAT ON LNDG.
