Synopsis

A B757-200 NOSE TIRE INSTALLATION WAS RPTED AS IMPROPER DUE TO THE AXLE NUT NOT BEING FOUND FLUSH WITH AXLE. INSTALLATION WAS FOUND TO BE CORRECT.

Narrative

I WAS INFORMED LAST NIGHT BY THE CREW CHIEF ON DUTY THAT THE TIRE I CHANGED ON AN ACFT MAY HAVE HAD A PROB; AND I WISH TO RPT THIS EVENT. I REMEMBER THE TIRE CHANGE SPECIFICALLY; FROM ENSURING THE WATER DEFLECTOR WAS INSTALLED ON THE AXLE TO ENSURING THE INBOARD SPACER WAS NOT STUCK ON THE OLD TIRE; TO LOCATING THE GROOVE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE AXLE AND INSERTING THE TANGE WASHER WITH THE TANGE INTO THE GROOVE. WHILE INSTALLING THE NUT (WHICH WAS GREEN) THE WASHER DID NOT ROTATE AND AT NO TIME WHILE TORQUING THE NUT DID I SEE THE WASHER ROTATE. AFTER TORQUING THE NUT; THE SAFETY BOLTS INSTALLED EASILY; WITHOUT ANY PROB. AFTER CHKING FOR SIDE PLAY AND WHILE ROTATING THE TIRE; THERE WAS NO WOBBLE IN THE TIRE. THE ENTIRE TIRE CHANGE WENT SMOOTHLY AND WITHOUT INCIDENT ACCORDING TO THE MAINT MANUAL. THE ACFT SUBSEQUENTLY FLEW FOR 4 DAYS PRIOR TO THE MAINT ENTRY. THERE WERE NO PIREPS ON THE NOSE GEAR AND NO INDICATION OF NOSE GEAR WOBBLE OR VIBRATION AFTER THE TIRE CHANGE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE NOSEWHEEL INSTALLATION WAS CORRECT AND NO ACTION WAS TAKEN BY MGMNT. THE RPTR SAID THE PROB CAME UP WHEN SOMEONE NOTICED THE AXLE NUT WAS FLUSH WITH THE AXLE AND THOUGHT THIS WAS WRONG. THE RPTR STATED THE JOB CARD MAY BE REVISED WITH A CORRECTION.
