A SHOP TECHNICIAN RPTS USING THE INCORRECT TORQUE MULTIPLIER TOOL TO TORQUE AFT ENG MOUNTS TO P&W 4056 AND 4060 ENG REAR CASES.
ON OR ABOUT AUG/THU/02; I BECAME AWARE OF A PROB WITH ONE OF THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER KITS THAT WE USE TO TORQUE THE BOLTS THAT ATTACH THE AFT ENG MOUNT TO THE ENG EXHAUST CASE. I BECAME AWARE OF THE PROB THROUGH CONVERSATION WITH A MEMBER OF THE ENGINEERING DEPT IN THE TURBINE SHOP. I BELIEVE THAT WHEN ONE OF THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER KITS WENT TO THE METROLOGY LAB FOR SCHEDULED CALIBRATION; IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE THE WRONG EXTENSION HANDLE IN THE KIT. THE INPUT/OUTPUT TORQUE CONVERSION CHART IS AFFIXED TO THE EXTENSION HANDLE AND NOT THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER ITSELF. I CAN ONLY RECALL 2 SWEENEY MODEL 393A TORQUE MULTIPLIER KITS IN OUR SHOP BUT THE ENGINEER ALSO HAD SWEENEY MODEL 392A MENTIONED IN HIS NOTES. I CAN'T RECALL SEEING A 392A KIT. EVIDENTLY; THE 392A KIT HAS A DIFFERENT INPUT/OUTPUT TORQUE CONVERSION CHART ON ITS EXTENSION HANDLE AND IF IT WERE PUT ONTO A 393A TORQUE MULTIPLIER YOU WOULD NOT GET THE PROPER TORQUE OUTPUT. ENGINEERING IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE BOLTS BEING UNDER TORQUED DUE TO MISMATCHED TOOLING. THE TIME PERIOD IN QUESTION IS OCT/TUE/01 TO AUG/THU/02. I MAY HAVE USED THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER KIT IN QUESTION TO INSTALL AN AFT ENG MOUNT ON A PW4056 OR PW4060 ENG DURING THE TIME PERIOD IN QUESTION. THIS PROB COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY PLACING THE TORQUE CONVERSION CHART ON THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER HEAD AND NOT ON THE EXTENSION HANDLE USED TO ANCHOR THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER HEAD AND NOT ON THE EXTENSION HANDLE USED TO ANCHOR THE TORQUE MULTIPLIER IN PLACE. IF THE CONVERSION CHART WAS ON THE MULTIPLIER; THERE WOULD NEVER BE A QUESTION OF PROPER OUTPUT TORQUE AS LONG AS THE MULTIPLIER WAS PROPERLY MAINTAINED AND CALIBRATED.
