Synopsis

POTENTIAL GND CONFLICT WHEN A C172 PLT CROSSES THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND CAUSES A C207 TO GO AROUND ON DIRECTIONS FROM THE TWR CTLR AT BET; AK.

Narrative

I PULLED UP AT TXWY G FOR A RWY 36 DEP; STOPPING ON THE CTRLINE. THERE WERE 2 ACFT IN THE LNDG PATTERN FOR RWY 36. I CALLED THE TWR AND SAID 'HOLDING SHORT AT TXWY G;' AND THE CTLR REPLIED 'HOLD SHORT; LNDG TFC;' WHICH I READ BACK. AS THE FIRST LNDG ACFT WAS ROLLING OUT; THE CTLR INSTRUCTED HIM TO 'TURN L WHEN ABLE.' I REALIZED THAT THIS WOULD BE ON TXWY G; WHICH I WAS BLOCKING; SO I PULLED FORWARD IN A DOGLEG TO THE R MAKING ROOM FOR THE OTHER ACFT TO EXIT; WHICH HE DID. IN DOING SO; I CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. AT THIS TIME; THE SECOND LNDG ACFT WAS ON SHORT FINAL; AND WAS TOLD TO 'GO AROUND; TFC ON THE RWY.' I WAS THEN INSTRUCTED TO MANEUVER BACK BEHIND THE HOLD SHORT LINE; WHICH I DID. THE CTLR TOLD THE OTHER ACFT TO LAND IF ABLE; WHICH HE DECLINED AND SAID HE WOULD COME AROUND AGAIN. AT THIS POINT I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF; AND INSTRUCTED TO CALL THE TWR WHEN I GOT BACK; WHICH I DID. HOW COULD THIS BE PREVENTED? 1) STOP ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TXWY. 2) HOLD MY POS AND FORCE THE OTHER ACFT TO CONTINUE TO TXWY D (NEXT TXWY); POSSIBLY CAUSING A GAR BY THE SECOND LNDG ACFT. 3) STOP USING THE TXWYS FOR BOTH ENTRY AND EXIT TO THE RWY SIMULTANEOUSLY. WHAT DID I LEARN: DO NOT CROSS HOLD SHORT UNTIL CLRED FOR ANY REASON.
