Synopsis

AN A300 CREW; TAXIING FOR TKOF AT CYYZ; CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR THEIR DEP RWY.

Narrative

DURING TAXI OUT TO RWY 23 AT CYYZ VIA TXWY J; I INADVERTENTLY TAXIED PAST THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINE. THE LINE IS LOCATED AN INORDINATELY LONG DISTANCE FROM THE RWY AND I MISTOOK IT FOR AN ILS HOLD SHORT LINE THINKING THERE WOULD BE ANOTHER LINE CLOSER TO THE RWY. I STOPPED AS SOON AS I REALIZED THE ERROR AND WAS WELL SHORT OF THE RWY; ALBEIT PAST THE OFFICIAL HOLD SHORT LINE. THERE WAS AN ACFT ON FINAL APCH TO THE RWY (RWY 23); AND THE TWR CTLR; REALIZING WE HAD STOPPED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE; QUERIED THAT ACFT AS TO WHETHER OR NOT OUR POS POSED A PROB. THAT ACFT REPLIED THAT IT DID NOT. THE CTLR THEN QUERIED US AS TO WHETHER OR NOT WE HAD ANY CONCERNS WITH THAT ACFT'S LNDG. WE REPLIED WE DID NOT; AT WHICH TIME THE ACFT CONTINUED AND LANDED. ALTHOUGH; I WAS THROWN OFF GUARD BY THE UNUSUALLY LONG DISTANCE OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE FROM THE RWY; I SHOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED IT AS THE NORMAL HOLD SHORT LINE; NOT THE ILS HOLD SHORT; WHICH ARE NORMALLY LABELED AS SUCH. I HAVE REVIEWED RWY AND ARPT SIGNAGE AND WILL PAY CLOSER ATTN TO HOLD SHORT LINES REGARDLESS OF THEIR DISTANCE FROM THE RWY.
