B767-200 CREW HAD #1 ENG FAILURE IN ZOB CLASS A.
CLBING THROUGH FL300; CREW HEARD A LOUD BANG. ACFT YAWED TO THE L. ALMOST INSTANTANEOUS BURNING SMELL AND SOME SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. WE RECEIVED A CALL FROM 2 OR MORE FLT ATTENDANTS TO RPT FLAME FROM THE L ENG AND SMOKE AND FUMES IN THE CABIN. CREW NOTICED L ENG EGT RISING RAPIDLY. CAPT ACCOMPLISHED ENG SURGE CHKLIST AND DIRECTED FO TO DECLARE AN EMER AND BEGIN DSCNT TO KDAY. ENG STABILIZED AT IDLE. DONNED OXYGEN MASK. THERE WERE NO EICAS MESSAGES AND NO INDICATION OF FIRE. CAPT MADE SEVERAL PA'S TO PAX TO REASSURE THEM AND ADVISE THEM OF OUR INTENTION TO LAND IN KDAY. ADVISED FLT ATTENDANTS THEY HAD APPROX 10 MINS TO PREPARE FOR A POSSIBLE EMER LNDG. CAPT NOTIFIED FLT CTL OF EMER AND INTENTIONS THROUGH COMPANY RADIO. WHILE TURNING BASE TO RWY 24R AT KDAY; L ENG FAILED COMPLETELY. CAPT TURNED OFF L FUEL AND IGNITION SWITCH. ACCOMPLISHED DSCNT; APCH; AND BEFORE LNDG CHKLISTS. WE LANDED WITH FLAPS 20 DEGS AND AUTO BRAKES #2. STILL NO INDICATION OF FIRE. SMOKE HAD DISSIPATED DURING DSCNT. WE CAME TO A FULL STOP ON THE RWY AND REQUESTED INSPECTION BY FIRE DEPT. THEY ADVISED CREW THERE WERE NO FLAMES; SMOKE; EXCESSIVE HEAT OR OBVIOUS DAMAGE TO THE ENG. CAPT ELECTED NOT TO EVAC THE ACFT AND REQUESTED FIRE TRUCK FOLLOW THE ACFT TO THE GATE. AFTER SHUTDOWN; CAPT CONFERRED WITH FLT CTL AND THE MAINT COORDINATOR. THE DECISION WAS MADE TO CANCEL THE FLT. PAX WERE DEPLANED TO BE REACCOMMODATED. THERE WERE NO ADVERSE PAX REACTIONS OR MEDICAL PROBS NOTED. PLTS CONFERRED WITH OPS AND DECIDED TO DEADHEAD TO ZZZ TO COMPLETE THEIR ROTATION. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE DIRECTED TO DEADHEAD TO THEIR HOME BASE.
