Synopsis

FLC EXPERIENCES SEVERE TURB FROM A MICROBURST ON APCH. FLC WENT MISSED AND RETURNED FOR LNDG; BUT HAD A FLAP OVERSPD.

Narrative

CLRED ILS RWY 10; WINDS 270 DEGS AT 22 KTS GUSTING TO 30 KTS. DECLINED. VECTORED ILS RWY 28. MODERATE TURB ON DOWNWIND. CLRED ILS RWY 28; APPROX 4-5 MI OUTSIDE MARKER; GEAR DOWN FLAPS 15 DEGS; SPD 160 KTS; AUTOPLT ENGAGED; LOC AND GS CAPTURED. WITHOUT WARNING; THROTTLES CAME TO IDLE AS SPD RAPIDLY INCREASED TO 200 KTS. DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT; INITIATED CLB. SPD REACHED 215 KTS. DECISION TO GO AROUND. GEAR UP; THEN SPD RAPIDLY DECAYED TO 160 KTS; APPLIED FULL PWR. ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURB DURING GAR. FLT DIRECTOR GIVING CONFUSING COMMANDS; LATER REALIZED TOGA PRESSED ABOVE 2000 FT; SO NO GAR MODE. DIFFICULTY MAINTAINING ASSIGNED ALT OF 3000 FT. ISSUED CLB TO 4000 FT. FO CRM COMMENTARY EXCELLENT; AND VERY HELPFUL. WINDSHEAR TRAINING IN SIM ALSO ALLOWED EARLY RECOGNITION OF PROB. AFTER OUR GAR; ATC RPTED MICROBURST AT THE ARPT. I SUSPECT WE ENCOUNTERED IT ON FINAL. VECTORED TO HOLD AT HRV; NEAR ARPT. AFTER SEVERAL SUCCESSFUL APCHS BY OTHER ACFT; WE WERE CLRED ILS RWY 28 AGAIN; AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. MAINT INFORMED OF FLAP OVERSPD AND SEVERE TURB. DISCUSSION WITH DISPATCHER AFTER LNDG REVEALED HE DID NOT SUSPECT SEVERE WX. SEVERAL OTHER ACFT WENT AROUND; AND A FEW DIVERTED. FO CLR COMMENTARY WAS SUPERIOR; AND EXTREMELY HELPFUL THROUGHOUT.
