Synopsis

A MORE FIRM THAN DESIRED TOUCHDOWN IS THE END RESULT; EVEN THOUGH A PLAN FOR AN APCH IN XWIND AND GUSTY CONDITIONS HAD BEEN MADE.

Narrative

ADVERSE WINDS ON LNDG; SUDDEN STRONG UNPREDICTABLE SHEAR IN FLARE AND TOUCHDOWN. ON APCH TO EWR; TWR RPTED GUSTS TO 30 KTS AND STEADY STATE OF 300 DEGS AT 18 KTS. WE ELECTED TO USE FLAPS 3 DEGS AND PLANNED FOR GUSTY WIND CONDITIONS. ALL APCH INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL THROUGH 50 FT AGL; ON CTRLINE WITH FULL CRAB OF 25 DEGS AZIMUTH TO THE R. AT 30 FT; AIR WAS STILL RELATIVELY SMOOTH AND STEADY STATE. AS WE DECRABBED AND HELD R WING DOWN; WE ENCOUNTERED SUDDEN DROP-OFF. THE ACFT CONTACTED THE PAVEMENT FIRMLY ON THE RWY CTRLINE APPROX 1800 FT FROM THE THRESHOLD AND BEGAN AN UNCTLABLE ROLL TO THE L EVEN WITH FULL R SIDESTICK DEFLECTION. THE ACFT DID NOT EXCEED 15 DEGS OF ROLL AND WAS PROMPTLY RETURNED TO THE CTRLINE. IT HAD DRIFTED 20 FT TO THE L OF CTR. THE ROLLOUT WAS NORMAL AND TAXI IN WAS NORMAL. POSTFLT INSPECTION REVEALED NO EVIDENCE OF CONTACTING THE RWY AND NO EVIDENCE OF DAMAGE TO AIRFRAME OR FLT CTL SURFACES. ALL WHEEL TRUCKS APPEARED NORMAL AS WELL AND THE ACFT SUBSEQUENTLY FLEW ANOTHER UNEVENTFUL DEP AND ARR WITH SAME COCKPIT CREW. NO DAMAGE; NO INJURIES; NO ATC ISSUES; CREW WORKED WELL TOGETHER AND RESPONDED PROPERLY TO SEVERE UNFORECAST WX EVENT. AIRPLANE FLT MANUAL PROCS FOR WINDSHEAR WORKED WELL. NO PREDICTIVE WARNING THOUGH.
