Synopsis

A CORPORATE BEECHJET 400A CAPT RPTED THAT HE DID NOT UNDERSTAND HIS CLRNC FROM BUR CLRNC; BUT TOOK OFF ANYWAY; CAUSING A HDG DEV.

Narrative

DURING CLRNC DELIVERY AT BUR; WE WERE GIVEN THE ELMOO5 DEP WITH BURBANK 'L-7' RTEING. I LOADED THE ELMOO 5 INTO THE FMS. I GOT DISTR BY THE FUELERS BEFORE I COULD ASK CLRNC WHAT THE 'L-7' RTEING WAS; AND WHERE IT COULD BE FOUND ON A CHART OF SOME KIND. THE RTE IN THE FMS WAS THE ELMOO 5 FOLLOWED BY SLI; THEN DIRECT TO CRQ; OUR DEST. DURING THE DEP PROC; WE WERE TOLD TO INTERCEPT THE POM 164 DEG RADIAL. WE ASKED THE CTLR (SOCAL DEP) WHAT TO FLY; ONCE WE WERE ON THE POM 164 RADIAL. THE CTLR ASKED WHAT RTEING WE WERE GIVEN. WE TOLD HIM WE WERE UNCERTAIN OF OUR RTEING. WE WERE GIVEN A HDOF TO THE NEXT CTLR; AND TOLD TO ASK FOR RTEING TO CARLSBAD. THE NEXT CTLR ADVISED US TO FLY VICTOR 363 FROM POMONA; THEN INTERCEPT VICTOR 23 TO OCN; THEN DIRECT CARLSBAD. WE FLEW THE REMAINDER OF THE RTE TO CARLSBAD. UPON LNDG AT CARLSBAD; WE WERE GIVEN THE PHONE NUMBER TO SOCAL TRACON FACILITY. I ASKED THE CTLR ABOUT THE RTEING. HE TOLD ME WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE BURBANK L-7 RTEING AFTER THE DEP PROC. I ASKED HIM WHERE THE 'L-7' RTEING COULD BE FOUND. HE EXPLAINED THAT IT IS ONLY PUBLISHED IN THE ARPT/FACILITY DIRECTORY. OUR COMPANY DOES NOT PURCHASE; NOR DO WE CARRY A PERSONAL COPY OF THE AFD ON THE AIRPLANE. LOOKING BACK; I SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED THE CLRNC CTLR AT BURBANK ABOUT THE 'L-7' RTE; AND ASKED HIM TO EXPLAIN IT. I ALSO TOLD THE SOCAL CTLR THAT PREFERRED RTES OR STANDARD RTES THAT THEY USE SHOULD BE PRINTED SOMEWHERE BESIDES THE AFD. PRINTING THESE RTES ON LOW ENRTE CHARTS OR PUTTING THEM IN WITH THE APCH CHARTS WOULD MAKE THEM MORE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL PLTS.
