PLT OF SMA ON REFRESHER FLT WITH AN INSTRUCTOR EXITED LNDG RWY 30 AT LGB ONTO RWY 16R/34L VICE TXWY KILO; WHICH INTERSECTS WITH BOTH RWYS AT THAT EXIT. PLT WAS EXPEDITING TAXI DUE TO ANOTHER ACFT ON FINAL TO RWY 30.

Narrative

AFTER LNDG ON RWY 30 AT LGB; WE REQUESTED FROM TWR TO 'TAXI BACK FOR A NW VFR DEP.' THE CLRNC FROM THE TWR WAS TO CONTINUE ALONG THE RWY; TURN AT TXWY K; AND TAXI TO RWY 25R VIA TXWY K. SHORTLY AFTER PASSING TXWY G; THE CTLR REQUESTED THE ACFT ON FINAL TO RWY 30 (BEHIND US) TO REDUCE SPD SINCE THERE WAS AN ACFT ON THE RWY (US); WHICH WAS OCCUPYING THE RWY. WE EXPEDITED OUR TAXI. MY INSTRUCTOR COMMENTED. 'TXWY K IS WAY THE HELL OUT THERE.' I SAW A DIRECTION SIGN FOR TXWY K; AND STARTED TURNING IN TO IT; AT WHICH POINT MY INSTRUCTOR ASKED 'WHERE ARE YOU GOING?' AND POINTED TO CONTINUE GOING STRAIGHT; SO INSTEAD OF COMPLETING THE HARD R TURN INTO TXWY K; WE WERE TURNING NBOUND ALONG RWY 34L (WHICH MEETS RWY 30 AT THE SAME POINT AS TXWY K. THEN; WE TAXIED INTO RWY 25R-RWY 7L; AT WHICH POINT THE TWR ASKED US TO TAXI ALONG RWY 25R-7L TO RWY 25R FOR TKOF. HUMAN PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATION: I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS I UNDERSTOOD FROM MY INSTRUCTOR INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING THE POSTED DIRECTION SIGNS. I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH LGB; BUT ASSUMED MY INSTRUCTOR WAS. WE ENDED UP ON RWY 25R-7L INSTEAD OF TXWY K. I BELIEVE THE QUALITY OF OUR DECISIONS WAS AFFECTED BY THE FACT THAT AN ACFT WAS ABOUT TO LAND ON THE RWY WE WERE USING; SO WE WERE TRYING TO GET OFF THE RWY AS FAST AS WE COULD.
