Synopsis

A FLT CREW DENIES AN FAA INSPECTOR ACCESS TO THE COCKPIT DUE TO A GOATEE THAT IS AGAINST COMPANY POLICY.

Narrative

FAA WAS ONBOARD ACFT GIVING US A LINE CHK TO FRA. THE INSPECTOR'S CREDENTIALS WERE CHKED WHEN WE MET HIM AT THE ACFT. DURING THE LAST HR OF THE FLT; THE INSPECTOR WENT TO THE CREW SEAT 3A TO TAKE A BREAK PRIOR TO LNDG. IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTN THAT FAA INSPECTOR DID NOT CHK THE MEDICAL LICENSE OF 1 OF THE COPLTS. AFTER A BRIEF DISCUSSION; WE WENT TO THE FOM TO REVIEW THE ROLE OF THE FAA CHK; AND WE NOTICED THAT AN FAA INSPECTOR WAS NOT ALLOWED TO BE IN THE FLT DECK WITH A BEARD OR GOATEE. THE INSPECTOR HAD A GOATEE. AFTER A BRIEF DISCUSSION AMONG THE FLT DECK; WE DECIDED TO NOT ALLOW THE INSPECTOR BACK INTO THE COCKPIT PRIOR TO LNDG. WE TOLD HIM WE COULDN'T LET HIM HAVE ACCESS TO THE COCKPIT; BUT WE WOULD BRIEF HIM AT THE GATE IN FRA. WE BRIEFED AT THE GATE AND SHOWED HIM THE FOM WHERE IT STATED THE FACT. THE INSPECTOR SAID HE WAS GOING TO WRITE US UP; BECAUSE WE DIDN'T LET HIM HAVE ACCESS TO THE COCKPIT AT LNDG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 582307: WHAT PROBABLY CAUSED ME TO LOOK AT THE BOOK WHEN NOTIFIED OF HIS GOATEE WAS THE GENERAL UNEASINESS OF THE FAA ASI IN THE COCKPIT IN THE FLT UP TO THAT POINT. HE DID NOT TAKE THE OTHER FO'S CREDENTIALS; WAS ENTIRELY UNFAMILIAR WITH COMPANY OPERATING PROC (HE WAS FROM IND AND WORKED PRIMARILY WITH ANOTHER COMPANY) AND SEEMED TO BE MORE OF A MECH ASI THAN A PLT. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL ALWAYS TRY TO BACK UP THE CAPT BY CHKING CREDENTIALS OF THE FAA/JUMP SEATER AND TAKING THE TIME TO NOTICE ANYONE WHO ENTERS THE COCKPIT.
