PA28 INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT ALMOST ENTERED CLT CLASS B WITHOUT CLRNC.
INSTRUCTOR WAS GIVING DUAL ON PERFORMANCE OF STEEP TURNS AND WAS ALLOWING STUDENT TO PRACTICE AS IS THE NORM. MANEUVER WAS BEING PERFORMED AT 3500 FT MSL AND WAS COMMENCED ON A 180 DEG HDG 6 MI ON AN ESTIMATED 250 DEG HDG FROM STATESVILLE MUNICIPAL ARPT (SVH). WINDS ALOFT WERE 050 DEGS AT 20 KTS AND THIS WIND WOULD PLAY A ROLE IN THE VERY CLOSE INADVERTENT CLASS B INCURSION. AS THE STUDENT REPEATED THE STEEP TURNS BOTH TO THE L AND R; THE AIRPLANE DRIFTED SOUTHWARD AND CAME WITHIN AN ESTIMATED 1 MI OF THE 3600 FT CLASS B FLOOR OF CHARLOTTE DOUGLAS INTL. UPON ROLLOUT OF THE LAST STEEP TURN THE INSTRUCTOR RECOGNIZED THAT THEY WERE ABOUT TO ENTER THE CLASS B AIRSPACE AREA AND ALT HAD DRIFTED TO 3600 FT. UPON REFING THE TERMINAL AREA CHART FOR CHARLOTTE AND THE CHK POINTS BELOW IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE FLT DID NOT ENTER THE AIRSPACE BUT HAD COME VERY CLOSE. IF ANOTHER STEEP TURN HAD BEEN PERFORMED THE AIRPLANE MAY WELL HAVE PENETRATED THE CLASS B AIRSPACE. THIS CLOSE ENCOUNTER COULD WELL HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH PROPER SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND REALIZATION THAT THE NORTHERLY WIND WOULD TRACK THE MANEUVER S OF THE POINT OF ORIGINATION. STUDENT/INSTRUCTOR TEAM SHOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED THIS AND COMPENSATED.
