B737-400 CREW WAS DISPATCHED WITH A FUEL GAUGE MEL'ED INOP. THE TOTALIZER WAS NOT DEACTIVATED AS CALLED FOR IN MEL PROCS.
HAD A BAD #2 FUEL PUMP GOING INTO YVR. WROTE IT UP AND CONTRACT MX CAME OUT TO HANDLE THE PROB. THE MAINT TECHNICIAN WAS NOT TOO FAMILIAR WITH THE SYS AND WE WORKED TOGETHER TO ENSURE THAT THE PROPER FUEL PAPERWORK WAS DONE FOR THE INOP GAUGE. HE SIGNED OFF THE MEL AND WE LEFT FOR SFO. THE FUEL GAUGE WAS INTERMITTENT AND I MISSED THE FACT THAT THE TOTALIZER SHOULD HAVE BEEN BYPASSED; HENCE LEADING TO MANUAL ENTRIES. THE GAUGE WAS WORKING FINE AND THE FUEL TOTAL WAS XMITTED TO THE FMC -- THIS WAS THE SAME AIRPLANE THAT I LOST THE DC BUS ON ABOUT 45 MINS AFTER TAKEOFF FOR SFO AND I DIDN'T EVEN THINK ABOUT THE MAINT NOT BEING DONE CORRECTLY UNTIL AFTER WE LANDED. ANYWAY; THE BOOK WAS SIGNED OFF BY MAINT; ALL THE BLOCKS WERE CORRECT; BUT THE MAINT PROC WAS EVIDENTLY NOT DONE CORRECTLY WHICH LED TO MY NOT DOING THE OPS PROC CORRECTLY. AND I READ THE MEL BEFORE WE LEFT YVR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 586669: R FUEL GAUGE INOP IN THE AIR. WROTE THE ITEM IN THE LOGBOOK AND CONTRACT MAINT FILLED OUT THE PROPER PAPERWORK AND SIGNED THE LOGBOOK. HE DIDN'T COLLAR THE C/B WHICH IS PER THE MEL.
