Synopsis

A C172 CFI DID NOT ACCOUNT FOR A TAILWIND AND ENTERED DC ADIZ WITHOUT PERMISSION.

Narrative

I WAS RETURNING TO KJYO WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE WASHINGTON DC ADIZ (AIR DEFENSE IDENT ZONE). THE PROPER PROC IS TO CALL AND ESTABLISH RADIO CONTACT AND RECEIVE A DISCRETE XPONDER CODE BEFORE PENETRATING THE ADIZ. ALTHOUGH I DO THIS FREQ WITH MY STUDENTS AND AM FAMILIAR WITH THE PROC; THIS DAY WAS THE FIRST OUT OF THE ADIZ WITH THIS PARTICULAR STUDENT. WE KNEW AND EXPECTED A TAILWIND COMING BACK TO KJYO; BUT IT WAS STRONGER THAN WE EXPECTED THAT DAY. ALSO; I WAS DISCUSSING WITH MY STUDENT HOW TO CALL FOR THE XPONDER CODE; AND WE WERE ALSO DISCUSSING HER NAV THAT DAY. I WAS DISTR FROM MY PRIMARY MISSION OF FLYING THE AIRPLANE FIRST; AND COMMUNICATING SECOND. UNFORTUNATELY; WE WERE 1.5 MI INSIDE THE ADIZ WITHOUT AUTH. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED POTOMAC AND WAS ALLOWED TO RETURN TO KJYO; AND WAS GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL UPON MY RETURN. I CALLED PROMPTLY AFTER LNDG AND SPOKE TO A GENTLEMAN AT POTOMAC AND RECOUNTED THE SIT. HE COUNSELED ME TO BE MORE VIGILANT IN MY FLT INSTRUCTION; AND SAID THAT HE WOULD NOT WRITE UP ANY PAPERWORK REGARDING THIS OCCASION. I CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THE GENTLEMAN'S UNDERSTANDING AND I WILL REDOUBLE MY EFFORTS TO NEVER LOSE MY SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IN THE FUTURE.
