INSTRUCTOR PLT OF C172 RPTS THAT POOR CTAF RADIO PROCS BY ANOTHER ACFT IN THE UNCTLED TFC PATTERN AT 2V2 RESULTED IN LESS THAN DESIRABLE SEPARATION ON BASE LEG.
I WAS IN A C172 WITH A STUDENT AT (2V2); DOING TOUCH AND GOES AT THE ARPT. I RPTED TURNING A L DOWNWIND FROM A L XWIND FOR RWY 29; AND HEARD A MOONEY RPT TO THE S PLANNING TO ENTER THE L DOWNWIND AT MIDFIELD. I HAD THE MOONEY IN SIGHT TO MY R; AND IT WAS CLR TO ME THAT I WOULD BE IN FRONT OF HIM IN THE PATTERN. ONCE PASSING MIDFIELD ON A L DOWNWIND; WE RPTED OUR LOCATION; THE MOONEY RPTED THAT HE WOULD ENTER BEHIND US. I KNEW THAT THERE WAS A PLANE DIRECTLY BEHIND HIM; WHICH MADE IT THREE IN THE PATTERN ON DOWNWIND. SINCE I KNEW THE MOONEY WAS MOST LIKELY TRAVELING FASTER THAN US; I DECIDED TO MAKE A SHORT APCH; SO I PULLED MY STUDENT'S THROTTLE BACK TO IDLE; HE TURNED AN EARLY L BASE FOR RWY 29. I RPTED TURNING AN EARLY L BASE AND MAKING A SHORT APCH FOR RWY 29. I HEARD NO CALL FROM THE MOONEY THAT HE HAD TURNED L BASE. ONCE WE WERE ESTABLISHED ON L BASE; I LOOKED TO MY R; AND THE MOONEY WAS AT THE SAME ALT; BUT JUST OUTSIDE OF MY BASE LEG. HE WAS ALSO ON A L BASE. I ALERTED HIM TO MY PRESENCE; AND THAT WE WERE INSIDE OF HIM; AND HE SAID THAT HE WOULD GO AROUND. AFTER OUR TOUCH AND GO; THE MOONEY RPTED US IN SIGHT AND OFFERED TO FOLLOW US IN THE PATTERN. I SAID THAT MY STUDENT AND I WOULD EXTEND UPWIND AND FOLLOW HIM AROUND. BOTH OF US CONTINUED IN THE PATTERN (WE FOLLOWED) WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE RADIO CALLS MADE BY MOONEY THROUGHOUT THIS EVENT WERE INCOMPLETE AND FAIRLY INFREQUENT. TO PREVENT: A PUBLISHED PATTERN ALT (HE WAS RPTED FLYING AT 600 FT AGL). ALSO BETTER RADIO TRAINING FOR ALL PLTS.
