A T-6 MIL PLT; LEADING A FORMATION FLT; FAILED TO REQUEST A XPONDER CODE FOR HIS WINGMAN DURING SPLIT UP OF THE FLT.
FLT WAS A 2-SHIP FORMATION OF T-6A TEXAN II ACFT WHICH DEPARTED EGLIN AFB; FL. CLRNC WAS RECEIVED TO OPERATE WITHIN W151A IN THE BLOCK ALT SURFACE-16000 FT. KNOWING THAT ANOTHER FLT OF T-6A'S WAS OPERATING IN THE SAME AREA; OUR FLT DECONFLICTED WITH THEIRS VIA INTERPLANE FREQ AND TOOK STATION IN THE A-4 SUBDIVISION OF W151A (EASTERN HALF OF THE AREA; 1/2 WAY BTWN THE N AND S BOUNDARIES; IN A ROUGHLY 20 X 20 MI AREA). UPON COMPLETION OF FORMATION MANEUVERING THE FLT SPLIT WITH THE WING MAN GOING TO OPERATE IN THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE A-4 AREA (A 10 X 20 MI AREA) TO ACCOMPLISH REQUIRED SINGLE SHIP MANEUVERS WHILE I MAINTAINED THE SOUTHERN HALF OF A-4. IN PERFORMING THE FLT SPLIT UP; I NEGLECTED TO OBTAIN A SEPARATE SQUAWK FOR THE WING MAN. AFTER APPROX 10 MINS OF SINGLE SHIP MANEUVERING; I BEGAN MY INDIVIDUAL RECOVERY BACK TO EGLIN AFB; RECEIVING CLRNC TO PROCEED DIRECT AND DSND TO 4000 FT. APPROX 5 MINS LATER; THE WING MAN REQUESTED TO RECOVER IN THE SAME MANNER. AT THIS TIME I REALIZED MY ERROR; AS THE CTLR BECAME QUITE UPSET AT OUR HAVING SPLIT THE FLT WITHOUT OBTAINING A SEPARATE SQUAWK. AFTER A FEW MINS DELAY; A SQUAWK WAS OBTAINED FOR THE WING MAN AND BOTH ACFT RECOVERED TO EGLIN AFB WITHOUT INCIDENT.
