A FLT CREW INADVERTENTLY ENTERED THE WASHINGTON DC ADIZ WITHOUT PERMISSION DUE TO IMPROPER NAV TECHNIQUES.
MYSELF (PF) AND A COMMERCIAL INST RATED PLT (PNF) DEPARTED MANASSAS (HEF) FROM INSIDE THE PUBLISHED WASHINGTON DC ADIZ AFTER RECEIVING A BRIEFING FROM LEESBURG FLT SVC STATION AND FILING AN ADIZ DEP FLT PLAN. THE FLT PLAN WAS FROM MANASSAS TO BROOKE VOR THEN ONTO CHORMAN; DE. (HEF-BRV-D74) THE PNF WAS WORKING THE RADIOS AND HANDLING COMS WHILE I FLEW THE AIRPLANE. WE TRANSITED THE ADIZ S OF NYG (TURNER FIELD/QUANTICO MCAS). THE PNF WAS TOLD BY POTOMAC APCH TO SQUAWK VFR; AS THE PNF SWITCHED THE XPONDER TO 1200; HE REQUESTED TO STAY WITH POTOMAC FOR FLT FOLLOWING TO ASSIST US IN STAYING CLR OF THE ADIZ AND RESTR AIRSPACE; BUT WAS DENIED. APPROX 3 OR 4 MINS LATER; WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TRANSIT BTWN THE ADIZ AND RESTR AIRSPACE AND NEGOTIATE WITH ATC TO REACTIVATE OUR ADIZ FLT PLAN/FLT FOLLOWING; WE WERE ADVISED ON 121.5 MHZ; WHICH WE WERE MONITORING ON COM #2; THAT WE HAD BREACHED THE ADIZ. I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO FLY THE RECOMMENDED VECTOR TO CLR US FROM THE ADIZ; WHILE THE PNF ATTEMPTED TO GET ASSISTANCE TO REACTIVATE OUR ADIZ CLRNC FROM QUANTICO APCH. QUANTICO APCH WAS ABLE TO GIVE US VECTORS TO REMAIN CLR OF THE RESTR AIRSPACE AND ADIZ WHILE WE REFILED AN ADIZ FLT PLAN WITH LEESBURG FLT SVC WHILE IN THE AIR. ONCE THE FLT PLAN WAS ON FILE; QUANTICO APCH GAVE US OUR NEW SQUAWK CODE AND WE WERE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO OUR DEST. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: PNF HANDLING RADIOS; LACK OF COMS WITH PF. LACK OF CLR VFR WAYPOINTS OR VISUAL AIDS DEPICTED ON ANY GRAPHICAL ILLUSTRATION I HAVE SEEN OF THE WASHINGTON DC ADIZ TO ASSIST A PLT NAVING UNDER VISUAL FLT RULES TO REMAIN CLR OF THE ADIZ. POTOMAC APCH DROPPING ADIZ ACFT IN AN AREA WHICH CANNOT BE NEGOTIATED VFR WITHOUT BREACHING ADIZ OR RESTR AIRSPACE. PNF AND PF WERE FAMILIAR WITH LCL ADIZ PROCS AND BOUNDARIES; BUT NOT WITH THE SPECIFIC LOCATION WHERE ADIZ WAS BREACHED. BETTER PREFLT PLANNING; THOUGH I HAD PRINTED OUT THE GRAPHIC OF THE ADIZ PUBLISHED ON THE INTERNET; PRIOR TO THIS FLT; NEITHER PLT COULD MAKE OUT ANY SPECIFIC VFR VISUAL CUES TO ASSIST IN STAYING CLR OF THE ADIZ. AS THE ADIZ IS SPECIFICALLY CREATED FOR PROHIBITIONS OF VFR ACFT; SHOULDN'T THE CHARTS BE AS CLR AS POSSIBLE DESIGNATING THE AIRSPACE THAT VFR ACFT ARE FORBIDDEN TO ENTER WITHOUT MAKING CONTACT WITH ATC AND GETTING A DISCREET CODE. HUMAN PERFORMING CONSIDERATIONS: LACK OF CLR AND CONCISE COMS BTWN PNF AND PF. PF WAS UNAWARE WHEN PNF CHANGED XPONDER TO '1200.' LACK OF CLR AND CONCISE GRAPHICAL DEPICTION OF ADIZ AIRSPACE; UNABLE TO PICK OUT VFR WAYPOINTS TO ASSIST VFR PLTS WITH STAYING CLR OF THE AIRSPACE ON ANY PUBLISHED TERMINAL OR SECTIONAL CHARTS. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: COMPLETED PLT ORGANIZATION SEMINAR. DISCUSSED EVENT WITH FLT INSTRUCTOR.
