Narrative

LCL PVT PLT BASED AT T66. FIRST TRIP TO WASHINGTON; DC AREA (VKX) FRIENDLY; MD. CHKED WITH BRIDGEPORT WX BRIEFER REGARDING SECURITY STATUS OF NYC TO ENABLE SIGHTSEEING ALONG HUDSON CORRIDOR GIVEN PROX TO GND ZERO. TOLD THAT THE STATE OF ALERT DID NOT CONFLICT WITH A TURN ALONG THE HUDSON. NEVER THOUGHT TO ASK REGARDING DC AREA GIVEN CLR STATUS OF NYC. DIDN'T FILE GIVEN A PRISTINE DAY. FLEW CT66 TO VKX. NEVER HEARD OF ADIZ AROUND DC. STAYED OUT OF CLASS B; BUT BROKE INTO ADIZ UNWITTINGLY. CHKED ARPT FACILITY DIRECTORY REGARDING VKX; NO MENTION OF SECURITY REQUIREMENTS. XPONDER SQUAWK 1200. CALLED 122.8 TO REGARDING VKX LCL TFC ANNOUNCE SETTING UP ON 45 DEGS TO RWY 24. NO RETURN INFO. ALL APPEARED USUAL UNTIL ON DOWNWIND LEG; THE CUSTOMS POLICE HELI SHOWED UP; LANDED WITH ME AND EXPLAINED THE RULES. IT SEEMED TO ME; BEING FROM NEW ENGLAND; THAT IF NYC WAS CLR TO FLY WITHIN 1000 FT OF GND ZERO; WHY NOT DC AS LONG AS I WAS OUT OF CLASS B. I WOULD HAVE PICKED UP THE CHANGE IN STATUS IF IT WAS PUBLISHED IN THE ARPT FACILITY DIRECTORY. I ALSO CHKED MULTIPLE AWOS/ATIS PRIOR TO LNDG TO BE SURE OF WIND SPD; ETC. IT MIGHT HELP IF THE ADIZ REQUIREMENT IS MENTIONED AS A NOTAM ON THE RECORDINGS. I WOULD HAVE RADIOED LESSBURG FSS. LISTING IT AS 'RADIO AIDS TO NAV' DIDN'T GET MY ATTN SINCE I HAVE A GPS AND COULD SEE OVER 50 MI. IE; I WASN'T LOOKING FOR WX OR NAV HELP AND WAS FLYING INTO A SMALL LCL FIELD OUTSIDE OF (BELOW) CLASS B AIRSPACE.
