B757-200 CREW RETURNED TO THEIR DEP ARPT WITH OILY SMOKE; FUMES IN THE COCKPIT AND CABIN; DECLARING AN EMER.

Narrative

ACFT CAME FROM HANGAR. MAINT SHOWED AN OIL SEAL HAD BEEN REPLACED ON THE #1 ENG. ALL OPS NORMAL UNTIL SHORTLY AFTER TKOF. ON CLBOUT AN OVERHEATED OIL ODOR WAS NOTICED IN THE COCKPIT. THE PACK TEMPS WERE NORMAL. FLT ATTENDANT CALLED WITH THE SAME ODOR COMMENT AND ADDED THAT THE SMOKE ALARM WAS ON IN THE LAVATORY AT DOOR 2L. THEN ANOTHER CALL FROM ANOTHER FLT ATTENDANT SITTING THAT THERE WAS SOME SMOKE VISIBLE ILLUMINATED BY THE READING LIGHTS AND SMOKE ALARM WAS ON IN AFT LAVATORY. FO WAS FLYING. I DECLARED AN EMER AND REQUESTED RETURN TO SFO. WE WERE AT ABOUT 12000 FT WHEN WE BEGAN THE RETURN TO SFO. I REVIEWED THE QRC CHKLIST FOR SMOKE/ODOR; AND AIR CONDITION; SMOKE CHKLIST. CONTINUED CONTACT WITH FLT ATTENDANTS ON CABIN CONDITION WITH SMOKE. THEY SAID SMOKE WAS DISSIPATING AS WE WERE DSNDING BACK TO ARPT; VECTORS FOR VISUAL APCH RWY 28L SFO. TURNED OFF R PACK ON BASE LEG; RECIRCULATION FAN; L PACK ON GND. NORMAL LNDG. FLT ATTENDANTS SAID CABIN WAS OK. TAXIED TO GATE; NORMAL DEPLANING AT JETWAY. NO INJURIES. FIRE DEPT CAME ONBOARD TO INSPECT ACFT.
