A B727 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED 30 MINS AFTER TKOF DUE TO A RPT FROM THE TWR OF SMOKE FROM THE NOSE GEAR ON TKOF. CAUSED BY NOSE GEAR SKIDDING ON HIGH SPD TURN ONTO RWY.

Narrative

THE TURN TO LINE UP ACFT FOR TKOF WAS MADE AT A HIGHER THAN NORMAL SPD. WHILE STILL IN THE TURN LINING UP WITH CTRLINE; THE THRUST LEVERS WERE ADVANCED ABOUT 1/2 WAY. THE NOSE SWUNG THROUGH CTRLINE TO A POINT APPROX 45 DEGS L OF CTRLINE. THE ACFT WAS ACCELERATING RAPIDLY NOT ALIGNED WITH THE RWY. THE CAPT WAS LOOKING AT THE TILLER AND ABRUPTLY MOVED IT BACK TO THE R. I PLACED MY HAND ON THE THRUST LEVERS AND SAID 'REDUCE THE THRUST.' THE NOSE OF THE ACFT RESPONDED VERY QUICKLY AND I BELIEVE WE DID SKID THE NOSE TIRE. AT THAT TIME WE WERE BEGINNING TO ALIGN WITH THE RWY AND WERE THROUGH ABOUT 100 KTS. THE ACFT WAS VERY LIGHT AND ACCELERATING RAPIDLY. I ASKED THE CAPT 'DO YOU WANT TO DO THIS?' AND HE RESPONDED 'YEAH; WE'RE OK; NO.' THE ACFT ROTATED AND THE REMAINING TKOF AND CLBOUT WERE NORMAL INCLUDING GEAR RETRACTION. ABOUT 30 MINS LATER; CTR ADVISED US THAT AN ACFT ON THE GND IN ZZZ NOTICED THE NOSEWHEEL OFF CTR ABOUT 45 DEGS AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE NOSE TIRES. WE CONSULTED WITH COMPANY AND AFTER EVALUATION OF THE WX IN ZZZ1; ELECTED TO RETURN TO ZZZ. AN EMER WAS DECLARED. FLY-BY WAS PERFORMED DOWN RWY 27 FOR OBSERVATION BY TWR AND CFR. NO ABNORMALITIES NOTED SO WE RETURNED FOR NORMAL LNDG. MAINT PERSONNEL INSPECTED THE GEAR AND TIRES AFTER WE CLRED THE RWY AND TOLD US WE WERE GOOD TO TAXI IN TO THE BLOCKS.
